Movie Review - New Year's Eve (2011) (PG-13)

A Romcom for Auld Lang Syne

Garry Marshall's New Year's Eve is ostensibly a sequel to last year's Valentine's Day, a film I was very critical of for its surplus of subplots, overabundance of characters, and ceaseless intercutting. I described it as "a romantic comedy with Attention Deficit Disorder." I could easily make the same argument for New Year's Eve, and yet I feel much more forgiving this time. It's mushy, routinely implausible, a little too coincidental, and often times highly predictable, and yet I found the subplots a lot easier to keep track of, I could invest in more of the characters, and in some instances, I was genuinely touched. Yes, this is yet another instance of me going easy on a romantic comedy. If you've read my reviews, then it's your own fault for not seeing this coming a mile away.

Unabashed star vehicles, both films are a series of intercut vignettes taking place over the course of one day. All feature a number of characters whose lives are, to some degree, interconnected. But there are some key differences. For one thing, whereas Valentine's Day took place in Los Angeles, New Year's Eve takes place in New York City. This makes perfect sense. Where else to be on the last day of the year than in New York, specifically Times Square? Furthermore, although the film once again features Jessica Biel, Ashton Kutcher, and Hector Elizondo (a veteran of Marshall's films), they play different characters than the ones they played in Valentine's Day. The biggest difference is that, while the previous film focused almost exclusively on romantic relationships, this one expands its horizons to include family and friends.

The best place to start is with Claire Morgan (Hilary Swank), who has recently been appointed Vice President of the Times Square Alliance. Quite simply, her job is to make sure the ball in Times Square drops on schedule. She wants to make a good impression, although she's understandably edgy. There to support her is her friend, a security guard named Brendan (Chris "Ludacris" Bridges). As would be expected, things don't go smoothly; as the ball is being raised into position, several of its 3,000 LEDs suddenly go out. Everything grinds to a halt. Claire is forced to make a speech to the spectators on Times Square, and while it was a bit sentimental, perhaps even out of place, it was nice to hear. After a while, it becomes apparent that the only one who can fix it is a Russian electrician named Kominsky (Elizondo), who everyone refers to in nervous whispers.

Meanwhile, a professional caterer named Laura (Katherine Heigl) is busy preparing for a New Year's Eve bash. Into her life reenters a music superstar named Jensen (Jon Bon Jovi), who's set to perform at a concert in the middle of Times Square. The two were supposed to get married a while back, but he got cold feet at the last second and split. He has been regretting his decision ever since, and he wants her to give him a second chance. Understandably, Laura isn't as ready to put the past behind her. Hovering around Jensen like a cat in heat is Laura's sous chef, Ava (Sofia Vergara). Her bouncy enthusiasm is exaggerated enough to be amusing but not so exaggerated that she seems like a hyperactive child.

And now, a quick rundown of the remaining subplots. A courier named Paul (Zac Efron) helps a timid woman named Ingrid (Michelle Pfeiffer) cross off items on a list she has made. Paul's best friend, a lovelorn New Year's hater named Randy (Kutcher) becomes trapped in an elevator with a young woman named Elise (Lea Michele), one of Jensen's backup singers. A single mom named Kim (Sarah Jessica Parker) must find her runaway teenage daughter, Hailey (Abigail Breslin), who desperately wants to have a New Year's kiss with a boy from school that she likes.

A man named Stan (Robert De Niro) lies in a hospital bed dying of cancer; his final wish is to be taken to the roof so that he can watch the ball drop one last time. At his side is a nurse named Aimee (Halle Berry). A man named Sam (Josh Duhamel) gets stranded in Connecticut after a wedding and is forced to hitch a ride with a family in an RV. He has to make it to New York City in time to give a speech, and possibly reunite with a woman he met on New Year's Eve a year ago. Finally, two pregnant couples - one played by Biel and Seth Meyers - are on the verge of delivery; it becomes a competition, as the first to give birth on New Year's Day with a $25,000 cash prize from the hospital. A few of these characters are connected in some way, although I leave it to you to discover how.

Of all the film's subplots, the one I liked the least was the one with Biel and Meyers. I don't know - something about turning impending birth into a contest doesn't sit well with me. Without it, however, we would not have Carla Gugino, which in turn would mean the loss of an outtake played during the end credits. To describe it would only ruin its hilarity. As for the other subplots, they're about as good as they can possibly be given their brevity and innate implausibility. I've long since learned to expect this from romantic comedies, which is why I'll often accept them for being exactly what they are. New Year's Eve imparts no wisdom about life and love. It's just what it is: A lighthearted, uncomplicated, feel-good date movie. Need it be anything more?

For more power, add affirmations such as "I love driving my new Porsche" or "I spend lots of quality time with my family". This reinforces what you desire. Hang your cardboard on a spot where you will see it on a very regular basis, such as at your desk or in the kitchen. Look at it daily, and really FEEL as if you have already achieved the things on your Board. It is precisely this FEELING that will help you to attract your vision into your life. Therefore, make sure to look at your Board as often as possible with focused intent. You will be happily surprised to see the things on your Vision Board show up in your life - sooner or later - providing you keep putting your intention on them and you stay positive and inspired.

By looking at your Vision Board on a consistent (daily) basis, you will manifest the life you truly desire and absolutely deserve!

It rains all the time, and the sun never seems to shine, this town has nothing great, until Bella finds the Edward Cullen. Once Bella finds the Edward, she can't keep thinking about them. I really enjoyed seeing Bella and Edward going through the ups and downs of their relationship, the fact that Bella and Edward have a mutant baby together just freaks me out to no end and gives me nightmares that keep me up at night. "Wintergirls" by Laurie Halse Anderson

Review: Wintergirls is about an 18 year old anorexic girl named Lia dealing with anorexia nervosa. She wants to be thin, so thin that she disappears and her body is breaking down and dying because of it. The book begins with the death of Lia's best friend (also suffering from an eating disorder) who dies in a motel room all by herself. Lia not only deals with her anorexia, but with a broken family and cutting problems. This was definitely another amazingly heart-wrenching book written by Anderson about a painful topic that many girls are going through every day. For all of those who have read Speak, please take a look at Wintergirls! this is one of the best Young Adults books I have read.

Review: The Hunger Games trilogy is a science fiction love story that takes place thousands of years in the future, where the United States is governed by one Capitol and divided into thirteen districts, the story is about a 16 year old girl Katniss Evergreen in a fantasy world called Panem (Latin for "bread") and who is "chosen" to fight in a to-the-death battle with other children in other districts, the winner of the Game will return with food for their district. The story is beautifully crafted and so unexpected. So many twists and turns that keeps your eyes glue to the pages. The first book was amazing it sets the story and fills us in on the history of Katniss Evergreen. The second book - has a twist in it that you don't see coming. The whole momentum of the story got slowed right down in the third book, the last couple of chapters in book 3 "Mockingjay" had me shedding tears for sure but she finally gets her happiness. I always enjoy reading a book that forces the reader to think deeper than what is simply on paper, and Suzanne Collins has mastered that with these books. The story is advertised as YA, but that doesn't mean it's suitable only for young adults.

"The Giver" by Lois Lowry

Review: The Giver is an exceptional novel about everyday life in a community with no feelings, color, war, or pain, everything is completely organized. This book is written from the perspective of Jonas who is an 11 year-old boy and the main character of this story. He lives with his father and seems to look and act different than the other people in his community. Then all that changes for Jonas when he turns twelve and is selected to receive all the memories that the society has never known, memories that will change his life forever. I loved The Giver because the plot was very creative, the theme was magnificent, and the setting was vivid, Lois Lowry used great descriptive words to bring the book to life. It's one of the best novels to share with young people, a story that they will remember long after they have finished it.

Review: J.K Rowling's Harry Potter series was a brilliant work of literature and fantastic for helping younger readers build their vocabulary and learn important life lessons. For anyone who hasn't read the series and has just watched the movies, the books are a must read. For those of you who are anti Harry Potter I would like to point out some of the saving qualities of these books. First, Potter has good healthy, relationships with adults. Second, Potter has relatives and a professor who do not like him. He shows that not everyone in the world will like you but that is not a requirement to having a good life. The books encourage imagination and creativity. There are other reasons but I think that J.K. Rowling has reintroduced reading for pleasure to our young adults and that is a feat indeed. J.K. Rowlings has a fantastic imagination. Harry Potter has been translated in over 67 languages, and the last four books were the fastest selling books in history. I recommend everyone to read these books because they have something for everyone: fantasy and magic, action and adventure, monsters, romance and laughter, anyone at any age will enjoy this set. "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak

Review: "The Book Thief" is the story of Liesel a German girl living near Munich during the Nazi uprising. One walks through Germany in World War II, along with Liesel and her best friend. Liesel is a orphan because her mother and brother freeze to death. The other unusual thing about the Book Thief is its narrator, Death himself. Everyone in the whole world seems to adore this book, one that actually touched me, and even made me cry more than once. Considering that the book is set in Nazi Germany, one may expect to find a bit more brutality but its lighter, its at Young Adult reading level. This book has my highest recommendation if you like stories set during World War II, if you want to read about a girl with such strength and emotion that it'll tear your heart out.

Review: If you like adventures then you will like this book. The main character Percy Jackson 12-year-old teenage boy who sudden finds out his world is not what he thought it was and his life is suddenly full of magic, danger, and adventure. He is also being attacked by monsters out of Greek mythology. His mother brings him to Camp Half-Blood where he learns that he is the son of a god and a hero who has to go on a quest. I liked the idea of the Greek gods being located in the western hemisphere. I thought it was clever how Riordan incorporated Greek gods into the modern world in a very clever, fun way. Constant adventure and an easy to follow storyline keeps the attention of anyone and everyone that takes the time to sit down and open it, there is no excuse not to read this book because it is totally fabulous! Once you open it, it will keep you enticed all the way until the very back cover. It's not just a best book for young adults but for everyone, even us "adults" who still enjoy the kid inside us.

Her best friend Vee is obsessed with all the things Nora chooses to ignore - boys, shopping, and drama. The way the book was written was amazing. It never left you bored, or wanting to skip a few pages. I would defiantly recommend this book to girls mostly it's a romance book and it doesn't really seem to appeal to boys. Once you open the pages, you will not be able to put it down!

Review: The storyline is really great, and Richelle Mead uses flashbacks of what has already occurred to keep you guessing and to help fill you in at the right moment without giving too much away. Vampire Academy tells the story of Rose a seventeen-year-old Dhampir girl, who is training to be a bodyguard for her Moroi (Moroi are mortal vampires and wield the earth's magic elements fire, water, air, earth) best friend, Vasilisa "Lissa" Dragomir. In the process of learning how to defeat Strigoi (the evil undead vampires) in St. Vladimir's Academy, Rose finds herself caught in a forbidden romance with her handsome instructor, Dimitri Belikov, while having an unbreakable bond with Lissa. The story was an overall good read, the main character is independent and funny, to be honest it was better than twilight, while Bella is weak and dependent, Rose is the exact opposite, independent and strong. I loved watching the characters grow and develop especially Rose and Lissa. Throughout the series they mature so much and it is incredibly fascinating to watch. I will say that these books are for a more mature YA audience because there is mention of some more mature topics. I would definitely recommend this series. It's definitely my favorite vampire series!

Review: Speak is a short novel packed full of tremendous emotions and that dealt with a tragic situation of 14 year old girl Melinda so realistically that it felt real. Melinda Sordino is an incoming freshman that called the police at an end of the summer party before high school started. She is friendless, outcast, because she busted an end-of-summer party by calling the cops, so now nobody will talk to her. After that Melinda has been speaking less and less, to her parents and to the friends who have abandoned her because she called the cops during a summer party. Her parents begin to see that something is wrong. They want to help their daughter but don't know how to. This book is very well written from a teen's perspective, you really get inside Melinda's head in this book, you really do feel Melinda's pain, you just don't know the reason behind it until the end of the book, it's just unbelievable, how good the author is at doing this, the author does a spectacular job of capturing the essence of high school. Speak is a wonderful message of hope, with touches of black humor It's a very dark story but it is still funny too. I recommend this book to all young adults. Her character is gorgeous and charming. From the Progressive commercial, this girl has managed to book several TV appearances and is fast becoming an actress worth taking a second look at.

With all the great looking girls in Hollywood today, Stephanie Courtney is definitely going in the right direction, and doing it the right way. Viewership in television has dropped considerably with the introduction of the internet, so it just makes sense to try to make it big in cyber world as well as television. Great job, Stephanie. FALL TELEVISION PREVIEW 2011 - is out, the kids are back in school, the summer buzz has slowed to a simmer, and then cooled, and now I'm pulling my snuggy and my slippers out, warming up some hot chocolate, forcing my doggy to cuddle on the couch with me for hours on end, while I watch the new fall prime time lineup from one network to the next, in search of my new diamonds in the rough to review for you! This year is no exception and I have a feeling it's going to be a great season, even though pilot season was almost at a dead stop this year, I still have hope!

10) The X Factor (FOX) - Simon Cowell is back with a brand new American Idol, basically. This show has a new panel of judges, well, sorta. Paula Abdul, not so new, but LA Reid and Nicole Scherzinger are new to the game. It's just a British talent show. I hate to admit that I am looking forward to this show, but it's a must watch, because you know that everyone and their momma is going to be curious to see if the show is better or worse than Cowell's first creation and after all, we do live for the hype. I don't see this show being original, so it barely makes the list at ten. I think that the show will be exactly like Idol, Dance, Top Model and we will watch it like zombies and it will get huge ratings because it's just more of what America wants to see.

9) Terra Nova (FOX) - Never mind the weird name, it's brought to you by Steven Speilberg, which usually speaks for itself, but after seeing SUPER 8 this last month, I do not assume that everything that the Berg makes is a monster hit. Obviously sci-fi, the show centers an ordinary family that lives on a dying earth in the year 2149. They sign up for project Terra Nova. The project transports them back 85 million years to prehistoric earth to join a colony of humans with a second chance to build a better civilization. Think, Dr. Mereau meets Land of the Lost and it has earned #9 on my list of shows to watch Fall 2011.

8) Ringer - (The CW) This show stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, and I love her, so I have hopes for this one. It's about a young woman on the run from the mob, and she poses as her wealthy twin sister to evade them, but she soon finds out that her sister has a price on her head as well. I'm a sucker for mob stories.

7) Charlie's Angels - (ABC) This show pretty much speaks for itself. It's a cool remake of the 70's classic, and the producers are on auto pilot as long as they follow the simple script that is already laid out for them. A monkey could make this show. We all know exactly how it goes, and there's not much mystery. Unlike Wonder Woman, there was no fancy suit or get up involved so the show was green lit without incident.

6) Icon News - (Bravo) This show is my sleeper and I already see a lot of eyebrows raising, but this looks like a very good show. Lew Marklin interviews celebrities from their living room, recording studio, on set or wherever they have a bubble cam, via skype about positive issues, etc. My interest in the show is its host, Lew Marklin. Many of you do not know that name yet, but in 2007, he hosted a show called ADHDtv, that was completely independent, came out of nowhere and ranked on the Neilsen charts next to Larry King and other major names. It was completely unheard of and though the show was somewhat odd, it caused ripples in TV land. Now Marklin has moved up the food chain to a larger network and I got a hunch, he's figured it out.

5) Person of Interest - (CBS) More hitmen and action! This show is about an ex CIA hitman and a Scientist who team up to stop crimes before they happen, sorta like the Minority Report. I like the concept and I think this will be a good action drama.

4) Prime Suspect - (NBC) I'm usually not big on adapted shows from Britain or elsewhere, but this show looks to be a good one. Female cop breaking sexist stereotypes. She's a tough female detective who has to prove herself in a male dominated New York City precinct. Sorta reminds me of last years premiere of Chase on NBC. A show that I also liked.

3) H8R - (The CW) Now don't H8 on me for saying that I grew up on Saved by the Bell, but for some reason Mario Lopez, who always shows up hosting some TV show, just when you though he and his dimples were retired, never completely flops, but never completely hits either. I like the concept though, and think that the show will be interesting and funny, and one of those reality shows that you can watch out of synch or miss a few times and not have to go back and catch up on what you missed.

2) Once Upon a Time - (ABC) I'm a girl, duh. Need I say more? What girl does not want to wake up in a fairytale, to find out that she really is the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming. Besides, I liked The Tutors and it seems right up that line historically speaking.

1) AWAKE - (NBC) I love a good mind warp and a challenge. This show is a trip. Two different realities and you get to experience it all with the main character who suffers a traumattic car crash the servers his reality. He, his wife and son were all in the car, but only two people survive the crash. Only problem is that he comes out of crash experiencing two completely different realities, one in which his son has died and the other in which the wife died, and he, and the viewer have to take the ride, in order to figure out which reality is true! I love it!!

Years ago, my in-laws started a tradition of getting together Thanksgiving morning amid arcade games and greasy
fries to bowl a few games. This Thanksgiving tradition has become a defining event in our family. Each year, more
families join us and we sit back and marvel at how our web of family and friends continues to compound each year.

Celebrate families and togetherness this Thanksgiving Day with some time-honored traditions, which give us a
sense of family identity and meaningfulness that can last for generations. Here are nine ideas for starting new
family traditions - and for revering the old ones:

1. Sit down with your family and reminisce about your childhood celebrations. What do you remember most about
Thanksgiving and the days that follow? Thanksgiving traditions can be much more than just food and recipes. In
what ways did your childhood traditions symbolize particular values, such as abundance, generosity, the importance of family?
What would you like to do that's the same? What would you do like to do differently?

2. Make a small booklet or a mini scrapbook album (which you can either make or purchase.) Write "Five Things
I Love About My Family and Friends" and keep it out on the table during your Thanksgiving celebration. Each guest
can come and record thoughts and insights. Other themes to try: "Five Things I'm Thankful For" or "Five Wishes

...so there's this guy...

He's perfect. It seems like he might, but you are dying to know, "Does he like me?" So many people get lost on the very first step of dating. You both think the other is into you, but sometimes it's hard to tell. He sends so many confusing and conflicting messages, you don't know what to do.

You think he's great. You like the way he makes you feel (sometimes!). He's even in your dreams, but you're afraid of embarrassing yourself by pursuing that guy because he's so hard to figure out.

Chances are, if you're this confused, he really is attracted to you. The whole "dating ritual between man and women is full of confusing undertones and bizarre rituals that neither one of you are even aware you are doing. So many loves get lost in the confusion...

The key is to take charge and figure this out so you can stop torturing yourself and get on with the smooching.

Does he treat you differently then other women?

Some guys are just incurable flirts. He'll chat up any girl he sees. Most guys only flirt with the one they are interested in. Pay attention to how he acts around other women. Does he say the same things to them as he does to you? Does he have the same kind of nervous shyness around them too? If not, you can bet he's attracted to you.

Men change around someone they like. Think of gorillas thumping their chest to impress a hot lady gorilla. Does he try to show off around you? Does he do weird things around you that he doesn't do around other girls? On the "Does He Like Me Scale" this is as close to a ten as you can get.

Is he super nice or super mean to you?

Compliments are obvious signs of attraction, but being mean?!! How does being mean show that he's attracted to you? It seems impossible, but watch any TV show about the mating rituals of mammals and you'll often see the male being a jerk to the female. It's a very primal instinct that men have.

Does he insult you, but then always try to be around you? Is it obvious that he's interested in you, but then he says something mean to you? You can guarantee that most guys don't even realize they do this. But think about what this accomplishes in your mind: you can't stop thinking about him! You spend your days adding up all the nice things he does and then you're stuck analyzing the mean things.

Is he always around?

You avoid people that you don't like. You hang out with your friends. You go out of your way to spend time with people you're attracted to. Same goes with the fellas. If he always seems to be around wherever you are, you can bet he likes you. If it seems like a big inconvenience for him to always "swing by," it's a great sign he's attracted to you.

Check his body language

We gravitate towards people we are interested in. Does he get a little too far into your personal space? Is he always leaning towards you? Does he touch you? Not that kind of touch! Does he bump into you or touch your back or arm when he sees you? This includes the mean touch like playfully trying to trip you or pushing you away.

Think about this: when someone pushes you, it's usually in anger. If he's not angry then he's obviously doing it for some other reason.

Eye contact

This can go in one of two possible directions. If he's shy he might avoid eye contact at all costs if he really likes you. If he's not shy, he will do his best to catch your eye. Try to get the shy guy to look you in the eyes. He'll give away his feelings for you faster than anything. If he's not the shy type, stare him down. Sometimes it's those small awkward moments that send you both into each other's arms.

Try leaning towards him during one of these stare downs. If he leans in with you, you're in. Go for the kiss if you're really feeling it! Which brings us to...

Mirroring

When we develop a closeness to someone, we unconsciously start to "mirror" their actions. As you talk to him, touch your ear (or hair or some part of your body) and if he repeats this action within a few minutes, he's showing his interest in you. It could be as simple as him always taking a drink soon after you do.

So he's doing most if not all of the signs of attraction and the readings on the Does He Like Me Scale are through the roof. How do you get him to make the first move? The answer is that he NEVER makes the first move. Sure, he might one day come up to you and ask you out, but you made all the little first moves up until that point.

Show interest in him. Ask him questions about his interests. Touch him back. Compliment him for something and yes, be mean back to him! If all else fails to bring that boy to action, you have to come right out and call him on it:

"I think it's weird that you haven't asked me out on a date."

Whoa girl! No one has ever said that to him before! Even if he was on the fence about you, now he's impressed. Not only that, you're not really putting yourself that far out there for embarrassment. Even if he counters with, "Because I don't wanna," you can answer with "Hmmm, interesting." And he's still in the hot seat!

If you make enough "observations" even the shyest guys will break down and ask you out. You no longer have to worry, "Does he like me?" and get on with what you've wanted all along: an awesome relationship.

Acting - Making Your Character Believable

To be believable an actor needs to truly study their character. There is a very simple method that an actor can use to do this. It is called the GOTE method. GOTE is a very easy to remember acronym. It stands for Goal, Obstacle, Tactics and Expectation. This is a very basic approach to breaking down a character. Now lets go over each of these objectives.

Goal is what the character is going after. It is the whole purpose for the play. The goal kicks off all of the action. The goal is to be persuaded by the character. Now the goal can't be general, it needs to be something very specific. For example a general goal would be "I want to feel fulfilled by marrying someone." A more specific goal would be "I want John to marry me." The goal needs to be very targeted. A good exercise is to imagine you are starving and there is a sandwich just out of your reach. Now try to reach for it. That is how you need to be when going after your goals.

The obstacle is what stands in the way of the goal. The obstacle needs to be in direct opposition to the goal. For example if the goal is "I want John to marry me" the obstacle may be "My parents hate John." The character needs to struggle with the obstacle to reach their goal. This is what makes a play interesting and not just 2 people having a conversation about the weather on stage.

Tactics are what a character uses to overcome the obstacles and reach the goal. This is were a play gets fun. The tactics make the character real. The tactics a character chooses shows the audience what type of person they are. The tactics can be funny, honorable, deceitful, etc. There can be multiple tactics used by an actor. A good actor will be able to move from tactic to tactic with ease in order to achieve the goal.

Expectation gives tone and excitement to the tactics. This is what stops the goals from being too academic and boring. It shows what is the characters excitement and enthusiasm behind their goal.

You can find what the character's GOTE is by just studying the play. An actor should take notes when reading a play. You can set up a GOTE sheet to have with you as you read. Just take a paper and write Goal, Obstacle, Tactics and Expectation. It is also helpful to write name, sex, age, marital status, education and make up a typical day in the life of the character (a day that does not take place during the play).

It really doesn't take that much extra work to setup a GOTE sheet. A character needs to come alive to the viewer. They need to draw the viewer into their world. An actor needs to do everything to create a character and world that is 100% believable. Studying a character's GOTE sheet can add the 3rd dimension to a character that is often missing in theater.

These advances in technology designed to trace a cell phone location came about as a result of a number of recent events, including the events of September 11, 2001. So, it is easier to track a cell phone location with a high level of accuracy in built up areas.

Nonetheless, most times you trace a cell phone location the information from the cell phone masts should be fine. After all, you do not need to know the person's location with a very great deal of accuracy for most purposes.

Positive Parenting Tip for Child Behavior for a Three Year Old

Dear Out-of-Control Mom:

Firstly, you are NOT a failure--just a mom who needs some new tools.

My guess is that you haven't had many courses on how to deal with three-year-old
behavior, so be gentle with yourself.

Many parents ask me what's "normal" when it comes to child behavior for a
three-year-old. No matter what your child's age, what it comes down to is this:
how is your child's behavior working for you, and how is it working for them.
From your question, I sense it just ain't working--period!

So let's first look at what is going on for your daughter. Children at the
pre-school stage are developing a whole host of new skills, including: wanting
more independence (for example, "No, I want to do it by myself!"); asserting
their wants ("I want that!"); and learning about friendship ("Give that back!").
One of the best things you can do when parenting a three-year-old is to support
your child in attaining these new skills without allowing them to become
demanding or spoiled. To ensure you don't fall into unhealthy habits that
promote power struggles, choose to use a firm--but kind--approach and look for
ways that your child can learn from each situation.

The more you can allow your three-year-old to do things on her own (and they
won't be perfect), the less likely she will be to fight you on everything. Look
for household tasks that she can do at her age and find ways that she can help
you out. Have her fill the dog bowl, hold the door open for you when you are
bringing groceries into the house, set the table, etc. The busier you can keep
her doing positive behaviors, the less chance she will move towards negative
ones.

Be warned: even if you take this approach, your daughter is still going to test
you. Below are six simple steps for dealing with three-year-olds when they just won't
listen:

1. Let Go of Timeouts - Timeouts can work for some children (but there
are far better techniques). Ultimately, the only person we can control is
ourselves. If timeouts are not working (that is, your child refuses to go to the
"naughty bench", stay on the "naughty bench", or tells you they make their own
rules and have moved the "naughty bench"), look for other ways to inspire them
to want to be well-behaved (as suggested in the following five steps).

2. Fire Yourself as Boss of the Household! - Many parents buy into the
belief that mom should be the boss of the household and be in control. Yet, we
must remember that we are modeling for our children how to act every single
minute of the day. Our kids learn more from what we do than from what we say. If
they see us pulling rank as "boss", they will attempt to be "boss" too.
Unfortunately, when this happens, they may outrank us and the real power
struggles will begin!

3. Provide Flexibility with Boundaries - Instead of boss, see yourself as
your child's coach or guide, responsible for providing them with experiences to
learn from and allowing them to experience the consequences of their actions.
Give clear guidelines, but also give them flexibility too. For example, "Your
toys need to be cleaned up before we go to Grandma's. Do you want to clean them
up now, or in 5 minutes from now?" If they still don't clean up, then you might
not go to Grandma's that day. Children need to know what the rules are and, more
importantly, they need to know you will follow-through with the rules. Once you
become consistent with your behavior, your children will learn to trust what you
say and will improve their behavior accordingly.

4. Stay Firm (but Kind) - If they fight, you follow-through. Do this
without yelling, scolding or punishing. Don't buy into their tears, and
definitely don't get into a debate. Stay firm, but stay kind. Tell them that
when they want a hug, to come find you. I know keeping your cool is easier said
than done. For more on this, check out the "Mom's Time-Out" section (page
111-114) of When You're About To Go Off The Deep End, Don't Take Your Kids
With You.

5. Use Consequences That Relate to Their Behavior - Punishment teaches
our kids to feel bad, but rarely teaches them how to "do good". If you are
encountering the same misbehaviors over and over again, your child is clearly
not learning from their mistakes. To facilitate learning, make certain any
consequences used are directly related to the misbehavior. For example, when
your child is rough with the computer, computer time is over; when your child is
splashing water out of the tub, bath time is over; or when your child is goofing
off with their food, dinner is over. Again, do these quickly, but kindly.

6. Thank and Appreciate Your Child for What They Do - Children want to
please and they want to know that their contributions make a difference.
Remember to tell them so--and often.

Learning how to motivate our children to want to be well-behaved takes time and
practice. Yet, taking the time now to learn these tools can save you years of
heartache and frustration. Keep reading, keep practicing, and keep empowering
that three-year-old of yours: then watch their behavior change for the better!

Credibility of Distance Learning in the Martial Arts

Something in the martial arts that is argued back and forth all the time is the effectiveness of distance learning versus traditional training in a dojo and can one learn the martial arts to any degree of proficiency through distance learning. In an age where communicating and learning via the Internet are staples of every day life and the ability to learn anything efficiently is open to everyone because of this, my answer is a resounding "YES!".

Consider this...one of the recent arguments I have encountered is that to earn a Dan ranking takes years and years of blood, sweat and tears and that only after you have spilled blood on the dojo floor can you be considered credible to wear the Dan you are awarded by XYZ Organization, School, Federation, etc. and only through this method can you become a better practitioner. While I agree with the idea in general, the argument against distance learning is that there is no way you can advance rank as a Black Belt, or as a Colored Belt for that matter, unless you train in a school under age old traditional methods. There is no way you can possibly learn any system of self-defense through "home study" methods.

OK..well...let's say that a person has put 15-20 years into his/her training and they now wear the rank of 4th or 5th Dan. This person has trained and completed all of the requirements to advance his/her rank. I guess some could say that because of the rank and the years put into the training that he/she is deserving of praise and respect, being of great honor and integrity because of the advancements and the time spent training in the arts. This person obviously has learned what it means to be a better practitioner and is now credible in the eyes of his/her peers. Seems like a solid point.

Now, on the flip side of that coin, let's say that this same person on the outside looks and acts like the rank they wear and talks the talk of a true Black Belt but underneath has a drinking problem or a drug problem or, worse yet, both. They treat people with disrespect behind their backs and are full of ego. Every time something goes wrong in his/her life all they want to do is go out, get high and pick a fight. Just so you know, I am not speaking hypothetically. I trained under just such a person. Does this mean he/she deserves to wear the rank of an advanced Dan just because they have put their time in at a traditional school and passed the curriculum? Does this make him/her better than me or anyone else who wants to open up their learning to a credible, comprehensive distance learning program taught by advanced, committed, honorable individuals? I think not as we all know that the martial arts are about so much more than just the belt one wears.

The traditional thinking is if you choose to train like this that it is lacking in so many respects, ie: training quality, lack of training partners, too easy to slack off and not train, no one is there to insure you are actually performing the material, and on and on, that there is no way this can work and once you receive your rank, it is just a "piece of paper" from a "diploma mill" or in the case of a Dan ranking, a paper "Black Belt Mill". Well, let me pose this question to you, what takes more effort, dedication, perseverance, integrity and personal commitment, walking into a local school and having someone tell you what to do or to take a course and break it down yourself, put together a training schedule based around your school or work schedule, provide yourself with a place to train and then effectively complete the training per belt rank? I realize this question is rhetorical but the point I am trying to make is that BOTH methods of study, in class and home study, are just as effective in learning any type of material and that as martial artists, to be so closed minded about knowledge via sources "outside the box", especially in this day and age of advanced technology, is a true detriment to the advancement of the arts as a whole.

The traditionalists fail to recognize the doors this can and will, most assuredly, open up to students around the world just as it has with all areas of education. Right now...today...you can earn the highest level of certified, recognized, accredited university degrees online from the most reputable Colleges and Universities - WORLD WIDE! This is an absolute, indisputable fact that even the most dyed-in-the-wool traditionalist cannot refute. In my mind, it isn't so much how you learn what you learn but how you apply that knowledge after you have learned it. I have always said that certifications and degrees are just pieces of paper but what ultimately makes them so valuable is the application of that knowledge and how it is presented to others down the line. We should always be moving forward with our knowledge, always be willing to embrace new ideas and concepts. If we stop learning, we stop growing.

As the sport is constantly evolving, so too must its practitioners evolve. No longer can we just accept the traditional training orthodoxy as the rule. Just the simple fact that hand-to-hand combatives have become so much more advanced in just the last 10 years would dictate that we as practitioners of the arts should be more open-minded and willing to advance our learning from as many sources outside of our own backyards as possible. Distance learning offers just such a solution by eliminating the geographical boundaries that currently exist in limiting students to train and learn in just one setting, in one style, and from one instructor. With the Internet, video conferencing, online tutorials, forums, blogs, etc. literally at our fingertips, the possibilities are endless. No longer will students have to be relegated to choices for learning that only include the local dojo. Imagine being able to train with and share information and ideas about advancing the arts with students from all around the world in real time!

Of course, to that extent, the traditionalist would argue that there would be a problem with time differences as well as differences in training disciplines and that there is no way this would work. Always an excuse. I have heard this argument for years but that is because they fail to see the potential that exists in people to come up with long term solutions to these problems, solutions that are offered by just such a group of dedicated individuals in the AKPKF...American Kick-Punch Karate Federation, headed by Sensei Danny Hill. This is an organization that leads by example and is all about keeping the integrity of the arts intact while attaching 21st Century thinking to an age old problem of bringing the training and discipline to students around the world who otherwise would not have access to the information and they do it for FREE!

Now, I understand that traditionalists want to keep the training in the dojo's...OK...but what about the aspiring student who wants to become involved in the martial arts but has nowhere to train, or who lives in a remote area where it is 50-100 miles to the nearest dojo? What about the people around the globe who live in villages where there is no training for thousands of miles around? How then does the traditionalist solve that geographical problem? They solve it by continuing to argue for classroom training as the only beneficial means of learning self-defense. In my opinion, what that argument really boils down to is money.

Think about it. They insist that receiving your certification via distance learning is not credible yet they take "Little Johnny's" tuition every month, usually an exorbitant amount, and pass the student through the system whether he/she has learned the material or not. Again, I am not speaking hypothetically here. I have seen this first hand even at the Black Belt level. This problem exists on a wide scale and is becoming worse every day. The traditionalists say that distance learning has become a blight on our beloved art form and that it is denigrating everything that is sacred about our beloved sport, even to the point of "bastardizing" what the arts stand for, while all along doing the same thing by charging outrageous monthly fees and providing training that is mediocre at best. To me, this action is deplorable and not even remotely deserving of respect and honor, yet this practice continues to grow day by day with new "McDojo's" springing up on just about every street corner. The traditionalist view has become about "selling the product" and not about "teaching the art". Anything that does not "jibe" with their way of thinking is garbage and only their style and only the way it is taught by them, is the "be all to end all" and the only path towards martial arts excellence. In my opinion, there is nothing credible about this practice or this way of thinking and it is only hurting the arts, not enhancing them.

In closing, let me state that I have had great personal success training in both mediums. Each method has its place in education and each, in my opinion, is equally effective. I believe that both methods can co-exist peacefully. I personally have continued to expand my knowledge of self-defense through many different methods of learning such as books, tapes, cd's, dvd's, online tutorials, and traditional training on the mats with practitioners who are also open-minded enough to see the positive impact that distance learning can have on all of us if we would just embrace the need for this type of studying. I have my own dojo and am about to begin my training in Renzoku Jiu-Jitsu, a program that is taught by Soke John Cozatt who happens to live on the East Coast (I live on the West Coast) and yes, it is a distance learning program, one that I can advance to 5th Dan in and since that is the highest level of achievement in that system, that is my goal. In lieu of this program, in order for me to train in a "credible" traditional jiu-jitsu class setting, I would have to drive 100 miles round trip 3 nights a week at great expense to accomplish what I can do in my own dojo via distance learning. Whether or not I make it to 5th Dan will strictly be up to me but that really isn't the issue. The point is that the opportunity exists for all of us to utilize modern day technology to continue to move forward with our training and help advance this sport through the 21st Century. We have to continue to be open to new training methods and learning techniques so that the martial arts can continue to grow and survive. I for one will do all I can to be at the forefront of that movement.

"Tower Heist", Ben Stiller's latest movie will hit the screens on November 2, 2011. After Jim Carrey's "Fun with Dick and Jane" a dozen movies with similar synopsis flocked the screen. "Tower Heist" too has a similar script. But, we can certainly expect more from Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. News is afloat that Ben Stiller is paid $15 million for this movie. We hope the actor does justice to his payment.

Brett Ratner, the director of "Tower Heist" is no new face. He is quite famous for his Rush Hour series. He has a unique style of mixing humor with action. We can see his trademark action scenes and mind-blowing comedy in this movie too. Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller both are known for their exemplary humor sense. The other cast includes Casey Affleck, Matthew Broderick, Michael Pena, and Gabourey Sidibe. The synopsis

Both firms provided valuable statistical data that shows the rise of consumers shopping on-line and the predicted dollar amount that will be spent in the coming years.

- I searched extensively on the Internet for sites that are e-commerce related. Upon visiting the sites, I evaluated each sites for the contents, thoroughness, and objectiveness. There are literally hundreds of sites that are devoted to e-commerce. However, after my careful examination of most of them, I narrowed down to four sites that I will research for this report.

- I have also researched many firms that conducts statistical researches. The two firms that I will be utilizing for this report are Forrester Research and Jupiter Communication. Both firms are known for their preciseness, non-objectiveness, and thoroughness. The statistical data I collected from these two firms will support my recommendation that every business should have an e-commerce solution implemented.

Results

From my research, I have developed twenty reasons why every business should incorporate an e-commerce solution into the business operation. They are listed below.

1. To Establish A Presence

There are approximately 70 million people worldwide that have access to the World Wide Web (WWW). No matter what industry or business one is in, one can not ignore 70 million people. To be part of that on-line community, one would need to be on the WWW for them. Because if one doe not do it, one's competitor definitely will.

2. To Network

A lot of what passes for business is simply nothing more than making connections with other people. Every smart businessperson knows, it is not what one knows, it is whom one knows. Passing out one's business card is part of every good meeting and every businessperson can tell more than one story how a chance meeting turned into the big deal. Well, what if one could pass out the business card to thousands, maybe millions of potential clients and partners, saying this is what I do and if you are ever in need of my services, this is how you can reach me. One can, 24 hours a day, inexpensively and simply, on the WWW.

3. To Make Business Information Available

What is basic business information? Think of a Yellow Pages ad. What are one's business hours? What does one do? How can someone contact the business? What method of payment does one take? Where is the business located at? Now think of a Yellow Pages ad where one can have instant communication. What is today's special? Today's interest rate? Next week's parking lot sale information? If one could keep one's customer informed of every reason why they should do business with them, doesn't one think one could do more business? One can on the WWW.

4. To Serve The Customers

Making business information available is one of the most important ways to serve the customers. But if one looks at serving the customer, one will find even more ways to use WWW technology. How about making forms available to pre-qualify for loans, or have one's staff do a search for that classic jazz record one's customer is looking for, without tying up one's staff on the phone to take down the information? Allow the customer to punch in sizes and check it against a database that tells him what color of jacket is available in one's store? All this can be done, simply and quickly, on the WWW.

5. To Heighten Public Interest

One won't get Newsweek magazine to write up about one's local store opening, but one might get them to write up one's Web Page address if it is something new and interesting. Even if Newsweek would write about one's local store opening, one would not benefit from someone in a distant city reading about it, unless of course, they were coming to one's town sometime soon. With Web page information, anybody anywhere who can access the internet and hears about one's site is a potential visitor to one's Web site and a potential customer for one's information there.

6. To Release Time Sensitive Material

What if one's materials need to be released no earlier than midnight? The quarterly earnings statement, the grand prize winner, the press kit for the much anticipated film, the merger news? Well, one sent out the materials to the press with "The-do-not-release-before-such-and-such-time" statement and hope for the best. Now the information can be made available at midnight or any time one specifies, with all related materials such as photographs, bios, etc. released at exactly the same time. Imagine the anticipation of "All materials will be made available on our Web site at 12:01 AM". The scoop goes to those that wait for the information to be posted, not the one who releases one's information early.

7. To Sell Things

Many people think that this is the number one thing to do with the World Wide Web. However, I have made it number seven to make it clear that I think one should consider selling things on the Internet and the World Wide Web after one has done all the things above. Why? Well, the answer is complex but the best way to put it is, does one consider the telephone the best place to sell things? Probably not. One probably considers the telephone as a tool that allows one to communicate with one's customer, which in turn helps one sell things. Well, that's how I think one should consider the WWW. The technology is different, but before people decide to become customers, they want to know about one, what one does and what one can do for them. Which one can do easily and inexpensively on the WWW. Then one might be able to turn them into customers.

8. To make picture, sound and video available

What if one's widget is great, but people would really love it if they could see it in action? The album is great but with no airplay, nobody knows that it sounds great? A picture is worth a thousand words, but one does not have the space for a thousand words? The WWW allows one to add sound, pictures and short movie files to one's company's info if that will serve one's potential customers. No brochure will do that.

9. To Reach a Highly Desirable Demographic Market

The demographic of the WWW user is probably the highest mass-market demographic available. Usually they are college-educated or being college educated, making a high salary or soon to make a high salary. It is no wonder that Wired magazine, the magazine of choice to the Internet community, has no problem getting Lexus and other high-end marketer's advertising. Even with the addition of the commercial on-line community, the demographic will remain high for many years to come.

10. To Answer Frequently Asked Questions

Whoever answers the telephones in one's organization can tell one that their time is usually spent answering the same questions over and over again. These are the questions customers and potential customers want to know the answer to before they deal with one. Post them on a WWW page and one will have removed another barrier to doing business with one and freed up some time for that harried phone operator.

11. To Stay in Contact with Salespeople

One's employees on the road may need up-to-the-minute information that will help them make the sale or pull together the deal. If one knows what that information is, one can keep it posted in complete privacy on the WWW. A quick local phone call can keep one's staff supplied with the most detailed information, without long distance phone bills and tying up the staff at the home office.

12. To Open International Market

One may not be able to make sense of the mail, phone and regulation systems in

all the potential international markets, but with a e-commerce solution, one can open up a dialogue with international markets as easily as with the company across the street. As a matter-of-fact, before one goes onto the Web, one should decide how one wants to handle the international business that will come one's way, because one's postings are certain to bring international opportunities to one's way, whether it is part of one's plan or not. Another added benefit; if one's company has offices overseas, they can access the home offices information for the price of a local phone call.

13. To Create a 24 Hour Service

If one has ever remembered too late or too early to call the opposite coast, one knows the hassle. Not all businesses are on the same schedule. Business is worldwide but one's office hours aren't. Trying to reach Asia or Europe is even more frustrating. However, Web pages serve the client, customer and partner 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No overtime either. It can customize information to match needs and collect important information that will put one ahead of the competition, even before they get into the office.

14. To Make Changing Information Available Quickly

Sometimes, information changes before it gets off the press. Now one has a pile of expensive, worthless paper. Electronic publishing changes with one's needs. No paper, no ink, no printer's bill. One can even attach one's web page to a database which customizes the page's output to a database one can change as many times in a day as one needs. No printed piece can match that flexibility.

15. To Allow Feedback From Customers

One passes out the brochure, the catalog, the booklet. But it doesn't work. No sales, no calls, no leads. What went wrong? Wrong color, wrong price, wrong market? Keep testing, the marketing books say, and one will eventually find out what went wrong. That's great for the big boys with deep pockets, but who is paying the bills? One is and one doesn't have the time nor the money to wait for the answer. With a Web page, one can ask for feedback and get it instantaneously with no extra cost. An instant e-mail response can be built into Web pages and can get the answer while its fresh in one's customers mind, without the cost and lack of response of business reply mail.

16. To Test Market New Services and Products

Tied into the reason above, we all know the cost of rolling out a new product. Advertising, advertising, advertising, press release and advertising. Expensive, expensive, expensive. Once one has been on the Web and know what to expect from those who are seeing one's page, they are the least expensive market for one to reach. They will also let one knows what they think of one's product faster, easier and much less expensively than any other market one may reach. For the cost of a page or two of Web programming, one can have a crystal ball into where to position one's product or service in the marketplace.

17. To Reach The Media

Every kind of business needs the exposure that the media can bring, as I touched on in reason #5 "To Heighten Public Interest", but what if one's business is reaching the media, as a newswire, a publicist or a public policy group. The media is the most wired profession today, since their main product is information and they can get it more quickly, cheaply and easily on-line. On-line press kits are becoming more and more common, since they work with the digital environment of more and more pressrooms. Digital images can be put in place without the stripping and shooting of the old pressrooms and digital text can be edited and outputted on tight deadlines. All these can be made available on an e-commerce solution.

18. To Reach The Education and Youth Market

If one's market is education, consider that most universities already offer Internet accesses to their students and most K-12's will be on the Internet within the next few years. Books, athletic shoes, study courses, youth fashion and anything else that would want to reach these overlapping markets needs to be on the WWW. Even with the coming of the commercial on-line services and their somewhat older populations there will be nothing but growth in the percentage of the under 25 market that will be on-line.

19. To Reach The Specialized Market

Sell fish tanks, art reproductions, flying lessons? One may think that the Internet is not a good place to be. Well, think again. The Internet isn't just for computer science students anymore. With the 70 million and growing users of the WWW, even the most narrowly defined interest group will be represented in large numbers. Since the Web has several very good search programs, one's interest group will be able to find one's company, or one's competitors.

20. To Serve One's Local Market

I've talked about the power to serve the world with a e-commerce solution. How about one's neighborhood? If one is located in San Francisco Bay Area, the Raleigh NC area, Boston or New York, there is probably enough local customers with Internet access to make it worth one's while to consider Web marketing. A local Palo Alto, CA restaurant even takes lunch orders through the Internet! But no matter where one is, if the big client has Internet access, one should be there too.

Conclusion

After detailed analyzing and studying of the effects and benefits of incorporating an e-commerce solution to an existing business, it is clear that an e-commerce solution will benefit the business in every aspect.

The implementation of an e-commerce solution will generate a brand new revenue stream, expand the market exposure, and decrease the operation cost. Many Fortune 500 companies, such as Dell Computer Corp., have already adapted e-commerce into their business operation. As I have mentioned earlier, Dell Computer Corp. is currently generating over 1 million dollars in revenues from their web-site. Many well-known "brick & mortar" businesses are starting to establish their presence on the web. For example, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, the top book retailer in North America, has just launched their web-site earlier this year following the success of Amazon.com. Amazon.com, the top book & music seller on the web, has been referred to have one of the most efficient business operation in the world today.

Based on the conclusion of this study, I recommend the following:

- Every business should implement an e-commerce solution into the business operation.

To succeed in business or life, I came to realize that we must continually take remedial actions. Putting myself on the line day after day can be extremely draining, especially when things do not work out as I desired. Hence, each time I face a disappointing event or undesirable outcome, I NEVER FORGET these famous failures:

1. Bill Gates, founder and chairman of Microsoft, has literally changed the work culture of the world in the 21st century, by simplifying the way computer is being used. He happens to be the world's richest man for the last one decade. However, in the 70's before starting out, he was a Harvard University dropout. The most ironic part is that, he started a software company (that was soon to become Microsoft) by purchasing the software technology from "someone" for only $US50 back then.

2. Abraham Lincoln, received no more than 5 years of formal education throughout his lifetime. When he grew up, he joined politics and had 12 major failures before he was elected the 16th President of the United States of America.

3. Isaac Newton was the greatest English mathematician of his generation. His work on optics and gravitation made him one of the greatest scientists the world has even known. Many thought that Isaac was born a genius, but he wasn't! When he was young, he did very poorly in grade school, so poor that his teachers became clueless in improving his grades.

4. Ludwig van Beethoven, a German composer of classical music, is widely regarded as one of history's supreme composers. His reputation has inspired - and in many cases intimidated - composers, musicians, and audiences who were to come after him. Before the start of his career, Beethoven's music teacher once said of him "as a composer, he is hopeless". 6. The Woolworth Company was a retail company that was one of the original five-and-ten-cent stores. The first Woolworth's store was founded in 1878 by Frank Winfield Woolworth and soon grew to become one of the largest retail chains in the world in the 20th century. Before starting his own business, Woolworth got a job in a dry goods store when he was 21. But his employer would not let him serve any customer because he concluded that Frank "didn't have enough common sense to serve the customers".

7. By acclamation, Michael Jordon is the greatest basketball player of all time. 9. Winston Churchill failed the 6th grade. However, that never stopped him to work harder! He strived and eventually became the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom during the Second World War. Churchill is generally regarded as one of the most important leaders in Britain and world history. In a poll conducted by the BBC in 2002 to identify the "100 Greatest Britons", participants voted Churchill as the most important of all.

10. Steven Spielberg is an American film director. He has won 3 Academy Awards an ranks among the most successful filmmakers in history. Most of all, Steven was recognized as the financially most successful motion picture director of all time. During his childhood, Spielberg dropped out of junior high school. He was persuaded to come back and was placed in a learning-disabled class. He only lasted a month and then dropped out of school forever.

11. Albert Einstein was a theoretical physicist widely regarded as the most important scientist of the 20th century. That did not stop him from incorporating Ford Motor Company and being the first to apply assembly line manufacturing to the production of affordable automobiles in the world. He not only revolutionized industrial production in the United States and Europe, but also had such influence over the 20th century economy and society. His combination of mass production, high wages and low prices to consumers has initiated a management school known as "Fordism". He became one of the three most famous and richest men in the world during his time.

15. Soichiro Honda was turned down by Toyota Motor Corporation during a job interview as "engineer" after World War Two. He continued to be jobless until his neighbors starting buying his "home-made scooters". Subsequently, he set out on his own to start his own company. Honda. Today, the Company has grown to become the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer and one of the most profitable automakers - beating giant automaker such as GM and Chrysler. With a global network of 437 subsidiaries, Honda develops, manufactures, and markets a wide variety of products ranging from small general-purpose engines and scooters to specialty sports cars.

16. Akio Morita, founder of giant electric household products, Sony Corporation, first product was an electric rice cooker, only sold 100 cookers (because it burned rice rather than cooking). Today, Sony is generating US$66 billion in revenue and ranked as the world's 6th largest electronic and electrical company.

Your main header, also referred to as a H1 tag, can:

Highlight Your Unique Selling Proposition

This is where you subtly demonstrate to your reader that your competition sucks. To do this, examine your competitor's sales letters, noting the benefits they offer- and more importantly, those they lack. Even if the two of you are selling the same product, you can position your offer in very different ways. Are they offering a money back guarantee? Do they fail to cover a specific topic that your explain in detail? Discover your competitor's weaknesses and demonstrate them to your prospects... Chances are, your prospects will shop around before committing, and it pays to plant the seeds of doubt in their minds about your competitors. Remember that subtlety is the key; you don't want to smear yourself as well!

Focus on Benefits, Not Features

Don't rattle off the features of your product; explain to your prospect how they will benefit from it. For example, if you're selling air conditioners, people aren't interested in the features (e.g. voltage, wattage, what type of plastic it's made of, etc.) they want to keep cool during summer!

To ensure you're listing benefits instead of features, ask yourself "How does this feature help my prospect?" List your features, then add the word "which" after it: whatever follows is a benefit. For example:

I've heard this phrase so many times I practically recite it in my sleep, and yet, so many people forget this simple law of copywriting. Bullet points tend to work best in sales letters, as they are easily scanned by readers. Keep in mind that your prospects aren't interested in every single benefit your product offers, just the ones that apply to them. By listing off dozens of benefits, you are increasing the likelihood your prospects will come across one or two main benefits they are most interested in, and buy your product.

Include Testimonials

My wife and I were on Ko Phi Phi Island in Thailand (where the movie "The Beach" was filmed) getting ready to grab a bite. While looking at a map, a couple of guys came up to us and recommended a restaurant saying, "This is the best restaurant we've been to on the island. You should check it out."

Guess where we went for dinner?

We didn't personally know these guys, yet we trusted them. This demonstrates what is known as social proof - people making decisions based on someone else's experience. If you're interested in something and you see that it has worked for others, you are more likely to trust them and-case in point- buy it. Testimonials are a great way to demonstrate social proof to your prospects; they can see for themselves that your product works and provides value to real people without you forcing it down there throats. Rather than singing your own praises, why not let your satisfied customers do it for you?

Here's two ways to gather testimonials:

1. When you're first testing your product (that is, the product you haven't created yet) ask people you know personally if they can provide testimonials citing your expertise in a specific area applicable to your product.
2. Once you create and sell your product, follow up with the customer via email and ask for a testimonial. Here's what I use:

Watch out girly dolls! There's a new doll in town.

Bratz, Barbie and Liv make way for the Monster High range of dolls. They are way too cool and a bit freaky at the same time.

The adults might wonder what all the rage is about but the tweens and teens can't get enough of them. Even the little ones can get a plush version so they don't miss out of the fun factor.The dolls are cute, fabulously fashionable and I think a pretty good idea given all the girly interest in vampires and werewolves nowadays.

The Monster High ghouls come in super fab packaging and are larger than the Bratz dolls, standing at 10 ½ inches tall. Differentiated Instruction - not so entirely new

The concept of differentiated teaching is an emerging teaching concept in the United States, but in Israel differentiated teaching has been around for a while. From preschool age all over, students are already grouped in heterogeneous groups. First grade teachers should think strategically - long term differentiated teaching across the curriculum is a model for raising the standards within the educational system.

How Differentiated Instruction works

Differentiated instruction has become a target model for helping Ells progress, which is an approach that should be applied to all general education classes. The principle of heterogeneous teaching is one and the same in all content areas.

Try and think how to diversify that lesson and open it to engage wider groups of students. Conceptually, the idea of heterogeneous or differentiated teaching involves a main teaching technique:

Same input - different task. Teachers take the learning objective and adapt it to meet the three groups of learning groups - higher - middle and lower ability students. The idea is to engage all the students without recreating three different sets of lessons. This will quickly wear you out as a new teacher.

Materials in Action

For example, if you're considering bringing in a reading passage on endangered animals, you'll need three sets of tasks. Three Must Watch Indian Crime Movies

With most movies speaking of crime in India in the late eighties and nineties, one remembers the crime capers movies in Bollywood. Unfortunately, there are not many crime caper movies, and most of the crime centric movies that exist spoke more about the emotional turmoil of the criminal and how they came to become a criminal. You see hedonism is still a foreign aspect to Bollywood. However, this does not mean that are no crime centric movies in Bollywood. Here is a list of the top three crime centric movies, which basically changed the way the world looked at Bollywood movies.

Parinda:

This movie is apparently the one that launched and re-launched the careers of at least three actors, Nana Patekar, Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff. Nana Patekar was a lesser known actor at that time, but yet had proved that he had the acting chops to carry off the role of an easily angered don who was scared of fire. Anil Kapoor needed a shot in the arm to boost his career that was about to be sandwiched between lover boy and elder brother. Jackie Shroff needed something to prove people that Subhash Ghai had actually made the right decision launching him as the big hearted ruffian and Nana Patekar wanted to make his mark in mainstream cinema.

The movie is one of the most slickly made Bollywood movies, and you will not find the usual song and dance routine, but will instead welcome the songs and dances when they come - because you are so overwhelmed by the happenings onscreen.

Scenes to Note: Nana Patekar's fit when he sees fire and the climax where Jackie Shroff kills him by basically locking him up in a room full of fire. Another scene of note is where their friend, a police officer is shot at the Kabootar Khana, a place where pigeons are fed. Before you say that it is inspired from Quentin Tarantino, we guys didn't even know him back then.

Dayavan:

Dayavan is one of those cult classics that had everything in it. The action, the emotion, the pathos of a person who has been born into the world of crime and succumbs to it, everything is portrayed on screen by one of the finest actors this side of the Arabian Sea, Kamal Hassan. The movie has been remade and made in several languages all over India, and is one of the best screenplays and storylines in modern cinema.

Scenes to Note: Scene where Dayavan first kills a police officer. Scene where his wife falls down from the balcony and the end sequence where Dayavan is killed by the mad son of the police officer he had killed as a young man.

Agneepath:

While Parinda and Dayavan were critical and cult hits in their time, Agneepath is something that I still remembered today, with many people memorizing the dialogue. This movie saw many things happening - it was another booster shot to Amitabh Bachchan's career, people agreeing that Mithun Chakraborthy can act, and basically gave Bollywood the license to make movies on the crime infested world of that time. The movie is said to have petered down when it was first launched, and it was only later that people understood what the movie was all about.

These are the three movies that had the guts to challenge the mentality back then, and many would agree that movies like Johnny Gaddar, Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai and even Shootout at Lokhandwala wouldn't have been possible if these movies had not made the first mark.

Cult Classic Movies, Incredible Mr Limpet

So one afternoon I was going through a TV guide and came across one of the all time cult classic movies, Incredible Mr. Limpet. Why does that title sound so familiar. Reading further I finally remembered. Even though I have never seen this movie for decades, its one of those that you remember and talk about it, but what was it called? One of the magical Don Knotts movies from the early 60's, where Mr. Knotts trips and plunges into the ocean then suddenly becomes an animated fish with spectacles. Everyone and everything on the surface is true life. This movie of live action/animation got me thinking, "how many of these magical movies are out there in cinematic land?" And, that's where my research began.

Not talking about computer generated imagery for this article and I hope this is not the end of cartoon world in movies as we know it, thanks to computer technology. No, we are looking at true art of cartooning and film making. Since 1927 (long before computers) there was Koko the Clown, a cartoon clown in live action surroundings. The clip was called 'Out of the Ink Well'.

1940 - You Ought To Be In Pictures

Only Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Porky's car are animated. Daffy and Porky quit the studio they work for to pursue a film career of their own.

1945 - Anchors Aweigh

A very nice fantasy musical with Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra. Animated performance from Tom and Jerry. Gene Kelly and Jerry Mouse do a cute tap dance routine. Basically the story is about two sailors who take off to Los Angeles for some life experience.

1964 - The Incredible Mr. Limpet

In my opinion one of the best of Don Knotts movies. A comical fantasy in the WW 2 era (1941) before Pearl Harbor. Shy, fish loving bookkeeper (Don Knotts) trips and plunges deep into the ocean and at that point becomes an animated fish. Comes to the surface and talks to the non-cartoon people on the shore, his wife and buddy (Carole Cook and Jack Weston). In the end he even becomes a war hero.

1964 - Mary Poppins

A fabulous Walt Disney fantasy musical where a magical nanny takes two young children on a journey.

Starring: Julie Andrews - Mary Poppins

Dick Van Dyke - Bert/Mr. Dawes

'Chim Chiminy' good movie!

1971 - Bed Knobs and Broomsticks

This fantasy musical is very comparable to 'Mary Poppins'. In 1940, Miss Price took a witchcraft correspondence course in hoping to help on the WW 2 effort against the Nazis. Eglantine Price and three children take you down a road of magical spells, adventure and fun on a bed for the whole family.

Starring: Angela Lansbury, David Tomlinson.

1977 - Pete's Dragon

A Walt Disney fantasy musical with live action/animation. Story is based in the early 20th century and a young boy named Pete (of course) has a friend named Elliott, an animated dragon who can make himself invisible. Lots of fun and action!

Starring: Sean Marshall, Helen Reddy, Red Buttons, Shelly Winters, Mickey Rooney and Charlie Callas (as the voice of Elliott).

The next selections are not quite considered as cult classic movies....yet. They are still hand drawn cartoon animation only with a tiny bit of computer help. That's OK! They are still magical movies and show us that we are NOT at the end of cartoon world.

Sadly it looks like we might have lost some of the fantasy musical genre. Old musicals have a special feel good aura around them. But then, so did 'Incredible Mr. Limpet' and 'Harvey'.

A murder mystery set in 1947. Bob Hoskins, as private detective 'Eddy Valiant' has an investigation in Toontown where he comes across the evil mobster 'Judge Doom' played by Christopher Lloyd and his group of henchmen played by animated weasels. Very entertaining movie!

1992 - Cool World

Starring: Gabriel Byrne, Kim Basinger and Brad Pitt.

A famed cartoonist finds himself in the animated world he drew and created. Mature (13+ rating) detective type story. A very well done live action/animated film.

1996 - Space Jam

Starring: Bugs Bunny (voice of Billy West) and Michael Jordan.

An out of this world story where a basketball game is challenged between the evil space creatures Monstars and the fun loving Looney Tunes. Michael Jordan joins the Looney Tune's team as a ringer. Most of the Looney Tune characters are here in this action pact movie.

2000 - Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle

Starring: Moose and Squirrel

Incredible Mr. Limpet started this journey of mine on the search for what I call the cult classic movies of this genre. Integrating cartoons with live action, what a great idea!

3D computer animation with live action may be taking over, bringing the end of cartoon world as we know it....I hope not! Never the less this genre also made great movies with their computer imagery software (another article). Great movies like these....

Movie Review: Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011)

If you're watching the third film in the Transformers movie franchise for any other reason than to see giant robots smash everything around them into tiny pieces, you'll likely be disappointed. The plot is even more of a convoluted, melodramatic mess than its predecessor and an overabundance of characters, both human and machine, leave the story a confusing mishmash of borrowed ideas - from bad sci-fi flicks. Michael Bay's infamous love of slow-motion and revolving cameras accents an eye-rolling silliness that might not have been as apparent otherwise, and the creators' desires to conjure up increasingly bigger and badder Transformers forces the action to steer towards the realm of unfathomably unrealistic. At least the state-of-the-art special effects complement the colossal automatons - because little else does.

Though a two-time savior of Earth from the threat of the evil, advanced alien race of Decepticons, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) still finds himself unemployed and unable to contribute to the ongoing efforts to keep the planet safe. When an ancient Cybertronian device is discovered on Earth, the leader of the peacekeeping Autobots, Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) determines to reactivate their previous leader, Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy) to help protect the technology from the scheming Decepticon Megatron (Hugo Weaving). With the battle once again returning home, Sam, his former military allies, his new girlfriend Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), and the dauntless Autobots must wage war against insurmountable odds to free their home from total destruction.

Although Megan Fox wasn't the main appeal of the first film (admittedly she was about the only thing left in the second feature worth looking at), surprisingly, her replacement will cause audiences to miss her presence. Model-turned-one-time-actress Rosie Huntington-Whiteley doesn't add anything to the incredibly lengthy project and her role is made visually apparent with repeated shots of form-fitting clothing, slender legs and pouty lips. It's almost as nagging as the leftover characters continually dropped into the storyline from the previous outings: John Turturro, Tyrese Gibson and Josh Duhamel no longer have a purpose, but are brought back for the sake of a larger, recognizable cast (and perhaps contractual obligations).

The new additions are certainly no better. John Malkovich, Alan Tudyk and Ken Jeong are among the most noteworthy, all inserted purely for comic relief - the one element a Transformers movie couldn't possibly use less. Their characters are part of a series of bizarre inclusions that continue to stretch the weirdness boundaries of the Transformers universe - along with puerile presidential footage alterations, Witwicky screaming incessantly, overdramatic slow-motion and ridiculous speeches intended to be rousing. On top of that are the abundant clichés - a female National Intelligence Director insistent on preaching chain of command lingo and barking orders to deaf ears, stagey posing before and after battles, a destructive chase sequence on a highway, an overconfident, impossibly wealthy businessman who interferes with Sam's self esteem, and a final, epic, sustained fight that stretches over 30 minutes.

It's only the third movie and writer Ehren Kruger has completely run out of ideas, while director Michael Bay proves once again that his obsession with slow motion and cameras moving in circles around actors can ruin any moment. The editing remains incredibly annoying while the choreography continues to be overly complex, the robots largely indistinguishable, and the action exhaustive. Transformers just aren't fun anymore.

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988) - There's trouble in Toontown in this classic favorite. Families with older children might consider this film for a family night pick. Some scenes may give younger children a fright. The film is a wonderful combination of comedy, mystery, fantasy and live action mixed with animation.

South Park: Bigger, Longer and Uncut (1999) - South Park took hold of its success and went the comedy movies route when it was brought to the big screen in 1999. As usual, fans' favorite characters -Kyle, Stan, Cartman and friends- are in the midst of comical adventure, with no shortage of foul language and extremely crude humor.

Action Figures - Collecting, Playing, Selling A Junky's Commentary

A Recollection

Almost all of us can remember a time when we were small, sitting in our bedroom playing with action figures. For me it was all about Transformers, Voltron, He-Man, Batman, and my personal favorite Superman. With these tiny plastic heroes of my youth, I would entertain myself for hours on end acting out epic stories depicting the eternal struggle between good and evil. What can I say, even as a child I was pretty deep.

As I got older my friends put away their childhood toys, I was a bit more reluctant. I moved my collection from my bedroom to the basement. It shames me to say it today, but I hid my action figure addiction from my friends.

Today I am approaching 30 and the action figure industry is even more glorious than I could have ever dreamed it could be as a child. True, some of the figure aren't as well built as they used to be (I miss the old days when Superman's cape was cloth) but the detail that can be reached is nothing less than amazing.

Todd McFarlane is a pioneer in the industry. This comic book artist turned action figure guru took is impeccable eye for detail and took it to the toy store. With his unleashing of Spawn toys, once childhood toy collectors who had lost their path on their way to adulthood, found themselves surrounded by miniature sculptures of art that made us wish we were kids once again.

Star Wars

With the re-release of the Star Wars movies, and the creation of the prequels, came what we all had hoped for, new Star Wars Action Figures! This was great for two reasons:

1- MORE STAR WARS TOYS! Who doesn't like that? I'll tell you who, NOBODY!

2- The older Star Wars Collectibles sky-rocketed in value! Yes, the new toys were cool, but it made the original Vintage Action Figures even more valuable. Collectors ran to the toy stores to get as many of the new toys as they could because any good collector knows, what's popular today becomes vintage tomorrow, and even more collectible.

Vinyl Toys

A recent craze that is hitting the mainstream is Vinyl Toys. Munnys, Dunnys, and custom viny sculptures by various modern artists are sweeping the nation. Companies like KidRobot, MyPlasticHeart.com, and Giant Robot have brought us these vinyl cuties in droves. Local area shops like Shoparooni in Cleveland, Ohio are popping up all around the country spreading this new found fever. This is the newest craze, and as a collector you have to take notice.

Angelina Jolie To Star In New Werewolf Movie "Bitten"

We've learned that A-List actress Angelina Jolie will be starring in a new upcoming werewolf movie for Warner Brothers called "Bitten". Jolie will be playing a woman who's bitten by a werewolf, and leaves her pack for a normal human life where she begins a career, and falls in love. She is soon drawn back into the pack however when a rogue band of werewolves threaten the world she now loves. No word yet on a helmer for the pic, but I'm sure they're going to get someone if not top notch atleast very well known to helm this one. "Bitten" should hit theaters in 07' or 08'. In the mean time..we'll be sure to keep you guys posted on this one!

This film will make Angelina Jolie's horror film debut. The actress has taken on many roles ranging from action star (Tomb Raider, Tomb Raider 2:The Cradle Of Life, Mr. and Mrs. Smith),
to drama star (Alexander), to thriller star (Taking Lives). It'll be interesting to see how well she does in her first horror film role. Since she is taking on the starring role in "Bitten", this might put a serious cramp in those rumors that surfaced a few months back which had the 30 year old actress returning to play Lara Croft once again in another "Tomb Raider" film, which would've been the third movie in the video game adaptation film series which kicked off back in 2000 with "Lara Croft:Tomb Raider."

Great Movies Based In New York City

New York City is known for being a major tourist destination and also the city that never sleeps. Since it has a lot of famous attractions, it has provided a great backdrop for many great movies. From romantic flicks to action-packed motion pictures - a lot of movies have featured the bustling city of New York.

One of the main attractions of New York, the Empire State Building, is the favorite meeting place in classic romantic films such as An Affair to Remember, Love Affair and Sleepless in Seattle. The 1957 movie An Affair to Remember featured movie stars Cary Grant and Deborah Kerr. While the 1939 movie Love Affair starred Charles Boyer and Irene Dunn. This movie was such a hit that a remake of it was released in 1994. It starred contemporary movie stars Warren Beatty and Annette Bening. And even though Sleepless in Seattle mostly features the city of Seattle, the pivotal part of this movie was shot in New York. This modern love story starred Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan. Breakfast at Tiffany's showcased the very charming Audrey Hepburn. It also starred the talented George Peppard. Marvel Legends Action Figures and the Wolverine Character

I love the X Men scene and when X Men toys asked me to take a sneaky peep at what there was on the market - I just couldn't resist. I figured that there maybe one or two things connected to Wolverine that I would like but hadn't really prepared myself for the onslaught of paraphernalia that there actually was.

Initially I decided to learn more about Wolverine as a character. Who was this beast of a man? What did his claws signify? And quite frankly what was the real attraction? I soon discovered who Wolverine actually is and what the fuss was about.

Wolverine is a mutant who has the power to have accelerated healing. This empowers him to have the ability to regenerate damaged tissue. The speed at which Wolverine is said to heal can vary greatly and is directly proportional to the damage sustained. He is a mutant possessed with a killer instinct. His hearing and vision are also enhanced so he can detect anyone a mile off at least!

Wolverine brandishes a pair of sharp steel claws. They are an excellent weapon when he is in combat with others. Although I have to admit whenever those steel claws slice out f his hands a shiver goes through my entire body. His entire skeleton is hardened with adamantium and this also makes him an excellent fighter, he is also handy to have on your team as he has extensive experience of explosives and weapons too.

So, with all the interest that this wonderful character creates, I then took a long hard look at what is around on the market. I found some excellent Marvel Legends Action Figures and bought them back to the x men toys office so we could have a closer look. These were our initial thoughts.

We absolutely loved the Wolverine Select figure. A wonderful 6 inches tall replica of Wolverine with a deluxe Weapon X Base too. The best features of it was the originality of it all. Or you could get the X Men Origins figures that Marvel have produced. There are four to choose from too. The first is a Wolverine Yellow Costume action figure that is taken directly from the comic series. There is the Logan movie version - Hugh Jackman as Logan in this 3 and ¾ figure! The third of these is Wolverine in a brown costume and the fourth of is Wolverine in his army gear as seen in xmen origins: wolverine.

So you see Marvel have thought of it all. Not only have they most of the characters as action figures, they have then taken the many faces of Wolverine and produced one to suit every taste. I may not have known lots when I started this search but as my journey took its toll I discovered heaps. So many bits of Wolverine on the market, you can buy a Marvel Legends Action Figure of Wolverine or you can buy a bobble head of wolverine, costumes of wolverine in every shape and size and not forgetting the unforgettable claws too.

In conclusion, I have to say that I enjoyed the thrill of learning about the x men and received far more than I gambled when my curiosity of the Wolverine figure took shape. I hope you enjoyed my synopsis of the Marvel Legends Action Figures but in particular my own assessment of Wolverine himself.

20 Most Underrated Movies of the Past 15 Years

It seems that each year, we are bombarded with television Ad after television Ad telling us what we should and shouldn't do and what we should and shouldn't buy. The media has control over most of our thoughts and has the power to persuade us one way or another. Because of this, it is likely that each year, there are those movies that are overlooked by much of society. For your benefit, I have made a list of the 20 most underrated, under-noticed, an under-appreciated movies of the past 15 years.

1) Unbreakable: In my opinion, M. Night Shamyalan's best work. Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson clash to perfection in this film about two men, one with self-sustaining powers and the other, on the option side of the spectrum, susceptible to everything that is bad in this world.

2) 12 Monkeys: I promise I am not starting a trend of Bruce Willis movies. However, this film, intriguing from start to finish, gives its audience a peek into the future of our planet. Bruce Willis goes back and forth between present and past, trying to save the day, as usual.

3) Frailty: Probably Matthew McConaughey's best film. About a very religious father who has visions and murders people who God has supposedly told him are demons from hell. Bill Paxton joins the cast in a movie with a tremendous twist.

4) Almost famous: Thought Kate Hudson received acclaim with an Oscar for best supporting actress, this film is relatively unappreciated in the realm of movies. A superb cast including, Frances Mcdormand, Patrick Fugit, Billy Crudup, and Jason Lee takes us through the coming of age of an aspiring music journalist who travels around the country with an up and coming band. Full of sentimental moments, great music, and a look into the 70s world of rock, you are guaranteed to be enjoying this movie from start to finish.

5) Friday Night Lights: An intense look into the arena of Texas High School football, this true story makes any high school athlete remember the great moments and amazing relationships they had on their teams. Good performances all around combined with realistic live football action makes for another great film. My favorite sports movie of all time.

6) The Sandlot: A kid's movie at heart, this movie has been watched by children for over a decade. However, it is also a film for adults, discussing Babe Ruth, parenting, and, of course, our pastime, baseball. Adults with enjoy every moment of this movie as it will bring them back to a time when their lives were precious and innocent and when the most important thing in the world was when they had to leave the baseball field.

7) Hook: An amazing cast, including Dustin Hoffman, Robin Williams, and Julia Roberts makes this one of the most entertaining movies around. The story of Peter Pan is moved to the future after Peter had left neverland. Hook never forgot Peter and his lost hand. He wishes to fight once again and lures Peter back to neverland by kidnapping his two children. A new age look at Peter Pan, with real people, makes this film another must see.

8) Fifth Element: Yes, Bruce Willis in on the list again. Although this movie is a little hokey, it is exciting throughout. An fun movie about aliens and the end of the world will keep you on the edge of your seat. The action and quirky moments are what make this movie thrive.

9) Vanilla Sky: Tom Cruise hits the list with this movie that got little acclaim from critics. Once you start this movie, you will be glued to the screen. A great plot, and super twists throughout are what make this movie good. And Tom Cruise doesn't get to wow audiences with his good looks the whole movie and his face is mutilated early in the movie.

10) Boiler Room: A young cast of men portray a wall street stock broker company that cheats its clients into paying absurd amounts of money for stocks that don't exist. One man's world is destroyed by this and another's is turned upside-down as he learns that he is not working at a real company.

Sci Fi Movies: 2011 New Releases on DVD

We all love to have our movie shelf loaded with some classic science fiction titles, and maybe some not-so-classic movies that are just fun to watch. Over the last few months, quite a few sci fi movies have been released to DVD. Some you will recognize, others may not have done so well in theaters or were just released straight to DVD.

"Dinocroc vs. Supergator" was released to DVD on July 12 and while we will not pretend that viewers are going to flock to the stores in an effort to land this flick, it is fun to watch. David Carradine is the big-ticket star in this battle of two genetically engineered creatures. Regular weapons will not do the trick to rid the earth of these monsters, so "The Cajun" is called in to take care of business.

Combining SF with other genres is always risky, but it can also result in some very entertaining movies. "High Plains Invaders" is one such film as it is as much action-western as it is science fiction. This movie, along with the upcoming DVD release of "Cowboys & Aliens" are two of the more fun sci fi movies coming out on DVD this year. James Marsters and Sebastian Knapp lead the cast.

"Tremors" is hardly a newbie to DVD, but the Blu-ray release has just been made. This classic combines sci fi, comedy, and horror into one big ball of fun. The original movie was released in 1990, so this is a great opportunity to see actors such as John Goodwin, Reba McEntire, and Kevin Bacon early in their careers. Newcomers will get a kick out of this flick and science fiction veterans will love the upgrades on Blu-ray.

"Death Race" and "Death Race 2" have just been released as a combination set on Blu-ray. Jason Statham is the main draw in what became an instant classic. The set also features the unrated version of "Death Race" and has some great special features that offer significant viewing pleasure long after the movies are over. Even if you have previously seen either of these movies, the Blu-ray upgrade makes it worth the price of purchase.

While there are only a few of the latest releases in the SF genre to be released on DVD, they are a great example of what happens when sci fi is joined with another genre to create a different twist to traditional science fiction films. With more and more classics being released on Blu-ray, we have quite a bit to look forward to over the next few months.

Gears of War Action Figures

The video game finally makes an impact in the collectibles scene with NECA's release of Gears Of War action figures. After the success achieved by the huge Xbox 360 franchise, a decision was made to bring GoW toys to the ever booming market. Popularity will continue to grow as there has been word the game is soon to become a movie, as well as the confirmed finale to the series; Gears 3 to be released in April of 2011.

Action Figures Series One

The first release of toys based on the massively exciting Xbox 360 game was made public in the middle of 2008; much to the delight of fans nationwide. NECA was able to recreate some stunning, high quality figures which were lifelike and as close to those characters in the game as possible.

This first set included Marcus Fenix, Delta Squad leader as well as fellow COG Augustus Cole. Not to mention the two horrible (in a good way), Locusts, Locust Drone and Locust Snipe. A box set was made readily available for fans, as well as single boxes of each character. These also included all extra accessories and a head that could be substituted for either Locust.

Series Two

After the first series' success, NECA was given the go ahead to create another set of Gears Of War toys; which were released later on in 2008, November. Promising signs were shown in terms of added articulation, quality was maintained and the figures please many fans.

Four new additions were added, Dominic Santiago and Damon Baird (fellow COGs) as well as the Theron Guards, Marcus Fenix received a touch or two and was released once again.

Series Three

The third set of NECA's toys were released at the beginning of 2009. Four new in game characters were transferred to be created as real world models.

Once again a new version of Delta Squad leader, Marcus was released - he had received some note able retouching, requested by fans. A COG soldier (who I believe is Benjamin Carmine) was created, as well as a Theron palace Guard, Locust grappler and variation of the Locust Cyclops. Once again, the figures included in game accessories and weapons.

Borat Movie Outrages Kazakhstan

While viewers of the new Borat movie are laughing hysterically worldwide there is one country that is certainly not finding the humor. The country of Kazakhstan is outraged and wants somebody to do something. In fact, when President Bush met with the country's leader to discuss oil Kazakhstan seemed much more concerned about the Borat movie than anything else.

The reason Kazakhs are upset is because they believe that the character in the movie completely misrepresents the society of Kazakhstan and because of this the Kazakh government is demanding action. But, one thing it seems the country is missing is this is just a movie! Anyone who sees the movie will immediately pick up on the fact that it is comedy, not a documentary on the true Kazakh people.

Of course, the movie is rather offensive and politically incorrect and it is obvious that any Kazakh would be outraged at being portrayed in such a light, even jokingly. The country is portrayed as completely backwards and Borat seems to make fun of the country at every chance. The movie even shows Borat kissing his prostitute sister before leaving for his trip and last year at the MTV Music Awards Borat publicly ridiculed the country.

Kazakhstan has threatened to sue on multiple occasions and with the unbelievable success of the movie across the world it appears the country's anger will only rise. Or will it? The country has actually extended an invitation to Borat to visit the country he so enjoys portraying as backwards.

The country's first stance was to completely shun the movie and its character. However, the prime minister seems to be trying to find a new way to react. At first he ran ads on CNN, in the International Herald Tribune, and in the New York Times, that pointed out the country's accomplishments from cultural to social and economic to boot. Only time will tell how Kazakhstan will respond to Borat's success, but maybe they will take America's lead and simply laugh.

The movie makes as much fun of America as Kazakhstan, but instead of retaliating against the film Americans are embracing it and laughing more than they have ever laughed at a movie. Sometimes that truly is the best way to react, simply accept the movie as the comedy that it is and enjoy it for its creativity and originality.

As you probably already know, the second Transformers movie is doing very well at the box office. Kids really love this film and any doubt of this can be resolved by checking out the sales figures. One offshoot of this is many kids leave the theater dreaming of being their favorite Transformers characters. One in particular is Bumblebee. This one is showcased like few others in the second movie and the result is many kids will be wanting to emulate him. The good news for them is that there is a new toy that makes this much easier. Plenty of options here for kids as they can hear a transforming sound as the change from different modes. Are you movie crazy? No, I don't mean crazy for Harold Lloyd's comedy Movie Crazy from 1932 about a young man with little or no acting ability, desperately trying to be in the movies. I mean, are you crazy for movies period? I must admit I'm a cracker for movies. So, all those who consider themselves movie crazy raise your hands. Yup, that's almost everybody. Why are we movie crazy? Why do we live in a movie crazed society? Hey, what are movies anyway?

Movies are ideas and/or stories brought to an audience through emotion by sound and a sequence of seamless images. Thanks to Google Search.

How popular are movies? Well, the keyword "movies" boasts a mind boggling 1.1 billion and growing number of searches on Google's search engine alone. And the keyword "movie trailers" has collected a whopping 127 million plus searches. Watching movie trailers on the internet has become a popular past time for many. I know my husband's one of them. He loves to watch his movie trailers.

This past year alone has brought in an astonishing box office revenue of 29.2 billion dollars worldwide just for 2009. Movies are watched and made worldwide. The language gap has been dissolved due to the addition of subtitles. Now we can all share in the universal movie experience. As well as being universal, movies are made for everyone young and old. Why you can even see generations at most Disney or kid movie showings. There is something out there for everyone no matter what your age.

We celebrate movies and we celebrate the stars in our movies. We bring them into our homes by way of TV shows dedicated to stars like ET, ET Canada, Access Hollywood and TMZ to name a few. We grab supermarket tabloids like The National Enquirer and Star scanning the latest celebrity gossip and stuff them into our shopping carts when no one is looking.

We have Oscar parties like we do Superbowl parties and even bet or at least announce our opinions on who the winners of the Academy Awards, Golden Globes, MTV Awards, etc. will be. Then there's the classic TV shows like 'Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous' that we turned on faithfully oohing and aahing over the content like it was fine wine. The show ran for over 10 years (March 1984 - September 1995). What a run! What a concept! We actually got to tag along and drool over the extravagant homes, lifestyles and dream vacations spots of the stars. Today, you can watch similar shows like MTV's 'Cribs' and VH1's 'The Fabulous Life of....'

If you're more of a home body you don't have to leave the comfort of your own home to see a movie. You can literally channel movies through your TV's regular cable or on specialty movie channels like Thrill, The Movie Network, HBO, Movie Central, Showtime, Turner Classic Movies, etc. And that's after you've clicked through the TV movies of the week, recorded movies on your PVR or sent your kids to the video store to rent one of this week's new releases. Oh, and not to mention you can buy movies from your brick and mortar video store down the street or even online on eBay or Amazon.

How do we get our golden tickets to these grand palaces? We buy cereal boxes and cut out cardboard vouchers, we use our air miles points or exchange reward points to turn cash into movie tickets. We fill out contest forms in hopes to be chosen as the lucky few to attend pre-screenings to our favourite movies before they even hit theatres. We also line red carpets around the world and tune into celebrity interviews on our favourite daytime and night-time shows like The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Late Night with David Letterman, Oprah and Regis & Kelly.

What beats the movie experience? Nothing. We cue up for our tickets, purchase our favourite goodies, grab the latest Famous or Tribute magazine for casual light reading before our movie (while devouring our real buttered popcorn or bag of liquorice). The lights go dim, the screen widens and the picture and sound arrive simultaneously. We anticipate the movie previews while watching the nuisance commercials and then there they are. Those big beautiful coming attractions in all their glory. We whisper yeas or nays or give a thumbs up to our pals seated beside us for the next movie adventure we'll be planning. Then if we're lucky, that is, the guys will get to hear the bellow of the THX sound effect that roars around the theatre. (Hey, guys you can hear it on youtube or download it as a free mp3 or ring tone). Then the wait is over. Whoopee! And the adventure begins...

Again, why are we movie crazy? Could it be because movies are inexpensive; a cheap date; or an economical family outing. Is it that the encounter can be even more enhanced through the Imax or 3-D experience. Or does it go deeper. A chance to escape the real world if only for a few hours. Movies evoke emotion whether it's excitement, laughter, terror, sadness, inspiration, faith, love, etc. Maybe you're on an unpredictable adventure, figuring out a mystery or watching a family deal with loss. Movie's take us away; anywhere we want to go. Even the theatre itself is an experience as we've discovered. The lights, sound, feel, big screen, comfy oversized fabric chairs, convenient cup holders, popcorn and munchies from the snack stand, etc. The movie experience really touches on all our senses. What movies have stirred you emotionally lately?

The movies are one place where you can choose what you want to see and feel. If I want to be happy I'll go see a light hearted comedy. If I want to be thrilled I'll go see a thriller or horror. And if I want to entertain my little niece and nephew I'll go see the latest animated movie, etc. Then there's the rest of the genres that fill out the movie experience: action and adventure, crime and gangster, drama, epics/historical, musicals/dance, science-fiction, war, documentary, westerns, biopics, chick-flicks, detective and mystery, disaster, fantasy, film noir, guy films, melodramas/weepers, road films, romance, sports, supernatural, etc.

Movies bring people together. They are something to talk about at the watering hole at your 9 to 5 job, chat amongst your facebook friends or discuss in forums. We can talk about the worst movies we've seen or our all time favourites. We can quiz each other on movie trivia, quotes and songs. We can read or write reviews on movies, look up movie ratings and purchase books on movies. We can even get the latest Hollywood gossip sent to our email boxes or go online to peruse blogs such as Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy blog.

Is there any other advantage from movies other than the whole entertainment experience? Actually, there is. Many professional therapists are using movies to help people in crisis. There is a therapeutic movement using---you guessed it---movies. It's called Cinema Therapy. Cinema therapy is used because it's readily available (there's a movie theatre in every city pretty much) and the subject matter of most films are familiar to everyone. It also enhances the rapport between both the client and the therapist. Who doesn't want to talk movies.

Other benefits include the release of emotions such as when we laugh during a comedy our laughter releases stress, tension and/or pain. A tear jerker that makes us cry releases built-up/blocked emotions. How about movies that touch on relationships or parenting. These observations and/or lessons can bring us closer together with people, make us analyze our current situations/relationships or make us realize we've got work to do.

And if there's one last thing that solidifies our movie crazy mentality it's our want or longing to actually be in a movie and/or meet a movie star. Well, this just in---you can do both. Have you heard the term TV or movie extra? If you want a better than bird's eye view of making of a movie and to encounter a movie star or two sign-up to be an extra. You'll get paid, fed, be on set and maybe bump elbows with your favourite movie star.

Best Super Hero Movies Ever

I just finished watching Thor on Blue-Ray and I enjoyed it a lot. Who would have ever thought that a live-action Thor movie would ever be made. Especially if you had ever seen the Thor appearance in one of the Incredible Hulk TV movies years ago. The concept of Green Lantern is awesome but I never thought that a movie would be made. So while I'm waiting for a live-action version of the Legion of Super-Heroes I thought that I would mull over what I believe are the finest films in the ever-expanding genre of super-hero movies. I've limited myself to live-action films even though some of the animated stuff is really cool. I think it would be cheating to mix animated films with the live-action films. I've also limited the number of "best" films to 10 otherwise I quickly venture over into the realm of Return of the Swamp Thing and Steel. So here I go.

10. The Rocketeer (1991)

Any movie with Jennifer Connelly in it can't be too bad unless that movie is Hulk. The Rocketeer perfectly captured the look and spirit of the Dave Stevens comic book. Super-Heroes and Nazi's always go well together, like peanut butter and jelly.

9. The Incredible Hulk (2008)

Not to be confused with "Hulk" which was mentioned above, this 2008 soft re-boot of the Hulk franchise is actually really good. While not a sequel this film moves forward without invalidating anything from the previous film. The movie explores the fragile psyche of Bruce Banner; evokes the best of the Bill Bixby television series and has incredible (no pun intended) fight scenes with the Abomination. Plus the love story with Betty Ross is kept to a minimum. What more can anyone ask for in a super-hero movie? The only thing I can think of would have been a been a cameo from Wolverine.

8. Blade (1998)

I didn't know a lot about Blade when I saw this movie. I still don't know a whole heck of a lot about Blade the comic book character but Blade the movie super hero is awesome. Martial arts, swords and vampires. So cool its scary.

7. Batman (1966)

Sure it's campy; sure Adam West is a little pudgy; sure Cesar Romero would not shave his mustache but this movie is just fun. Has there ever been a better Penguin or Riddler as played by Burgess Meredith and Frank Gorshin respectively? For that matter Lee Meriwether is #2 on the list of best Catwomen behind Julie Newmar and above Michelle Pfeiffer. In this movie we of course see the classic Batmobile but also the Bat-Copter, Bat-Bike and Bat-Boat. We also learn that Batman carries anti-shark repellent in his utility belt. This movie would make the top ten list just for the scene with Batman running around the pier with a bomb in his hands.

6. Superman II (1980)

Fifteen minutes of this movie is probably the greatest super hero movie ever made. The fight with Superman versus General Zod, Ursa and Non over Metropolis still stands up to this day. If only Richard Donner had been allowed to finish the movie. We would have been spared much of the camp (this is bad camp unlike the good camp in the Batman movie) added by Richard Lester. The cellophane "S"; teleporting Kryptonians in the Fortress of Solitude and the mind-altering "super-kiss" at the end of the movie (as if Superman didn't already have enough powers someone thought it was necessary to add a few more) unfortunately forces me to keep this movie out of my top five.

5. Spider-Man 2 (2004)

Simply a good movie. No longer bogged down by the requisite origin story Peter Parker can just go and fight crime as Spider-Man. The scene with the passengers on the monorail protecting Spider-Man chokes me up a bit inside. "Spider-Man" probably would have made this list but no matter how much I liked Willem DaFoe as Norman Osborn I really disliked the Green Goblin costume in that movie.

4. Iron Man (2008)

Robert Downey Jr. playing a narcissistic self-absorbed self-destrucive person with a substance abuse problem...awesome casting. In one movie Iron Man went from B-list hero whom nobody but a comic book geek had ever heard of to a true cultural icon and being featured prominently on every Marvel kid's toy right next to Spider-Man. That's the goal for all of these movies (see Green Lantern above). Iron Man not only accomplished it but it is a very good movie on top of it. The only drawback to the entire movie is the closing fight scene between Iron Man and Obadiah Stane. I feel like the hero has to fight a bigger, badder version of himself has been done to death. For example it was done in the same year in Marvel's other film the Incredible Hulk. Ultimately, I thought the movie was more interesting when it focused on Tony Stark rather than Iron Man. It made for a good movie but I'm not sure if that is a great thing for a "super hero" movie so Iron Man only makes it to #4 on my list.

3. The Dark Knight (2008)

This movie made a bazillion dollars. Heath Ledger was awesome as the Joker. It's a fantastic movie. It's just so long (2 1/2 hours) and Christian Bale is screaming throughout the entire movie. I've always imagined Batman to have a stoic coolness...like Clint Eastwood. Any complaints I have about this movie, however, are quickly mitigated by a Batman and Robin flashback.

2. Captain America (2011)

What did I say before about super heroes and Nazis? Well it's even more true when the super hero is dressed up in an American flag. The Nazis don't stand a chance. I loved everything about this movie. Chris Evans was very convincing as Captain America and as Steve Rogers. Even the Red Skull didn't seem cheesy. All this and the Cosmic Cube too, I loved this movie. Captain America: The First Avenger is a great movie and well deserving of my #2 spot. There is only one movie that could beat it out.

#1. Superman (1978)

This is it. The Grand-daddy of them all. It may not be the first super-hero movie but it is definitely the first movie that you think of when you think about a super hero movie. Where Chris Evans was convincing in the role of Steve Rogers/Captain America, Christopher Reeve IS Superman and at the same time he delivers the definitive portrayal of Clark Kent. Others have played the role before and after Reeve but none have worn the cape more convincingly or confidently. Christopher Reeve truly made me believe that if a man could fly it would be him.

Effective Resume Writing: Lights, Camera, Action!

Action films are all the rage. With digital enhanced action whales can fly, demons come at you from every angle and imagined worlds appear on the screen like magic. What does all this have to do with writing a readable and compelling resume?

In a word: everything. The more action and color (we don't mean to print your resume on purple paper or use a red typeface) in your resume the more readable it will be. Writing skills come in many packages but for resume writing action and power words will win every time over a limp style that only highlights duties and responsibilities.

If you want to put the reader to sleep and for them to stop reading your resume after a sentence or two an uninspiring listing of your work history with your duties outlined in detail will do the job. So it's clear this is not the style to write an effective resume.

Keeping the reader awake when they are reading your resume is simple and straight forward. You must paint pictures and provide light with words and phrases. Active verbs and your record of accomplishments and results will get the job done.

Your accomplishments and achievements must be quantifiable. You did not, "improve morale," you "reduced unwanted employee turnover by 24% and in the first year saved over $103,000." You did not, "manage a marketing initiative," you "delivered marketing results that exceeded the plan by 45% and generated over $180,000 in increased sales."

You did not,"increase," something, you "vaulted ahead." You developed, built, delivered, solved, designed, analyzed, created and improved. Start your sentences with action and power verbs on your way to demonstrate how you turned opportunities and problems into value and results. The prospective employer is looking for someone who can generate results and value. A well written resume should be crafted to closely match the employer's needs.

Keep you sentences and paragraphs short. You want the reader to quickly move from one word picture to another.

You don't have to list three successful marketing campaigns-the biggest and best will get the job done. Be sure the early listed accomplishments match the top two or three needs of the employer. If you have to reach back to pull up the relevant accomplishment do so.

Your resume, also, should be tailored to meet the needs of a specific employer. Once you have the format set and your accomplishments written it's just a matter of cutting and pasting to put together an original document. If necessary, accomplishments and results achieved in other activities can be highlighted in your resume.

For example, one job hunter who had developed a very active in-house training program for a local Chamber of Commerce, qualified for a great job that required the developing of in-house training programs for a large employer.

So in resume writing you must have light, your message must be clear and easy to see. Don't keep the reader in the dark or where they have to connect the dots. Trust me they won't. Your camera is the reflection of your results. The action comes from the word pictures. The movies have found that this approach works; make it work for you when you write your resume.

Another Denzel Washington masterpiece was produced in the year of 2004. The name of the film is "Man on Fire", and it's my favorite Denzel Washington movie. It reveals some of the harsh facts about the kidnapping rates in Latin America, and how smart some criminals really are. If you are a fan of action or adventure movies, or you are just in the mood to watch a top quality movie, you should watch "Man on Fire". One forewarning about the movie, the first hour builds an emotional connection with all of the characters, and the second hour is when all of the action takes place.

Like I mentioned earlier, the movie takes place in Latin America, and a family assigns a bodyguard named Creasy (Washington) to protect their daughter Pita (Dakota Fanning) from being kidnapped. Pita is a swimmer on the school team, a great person in the community, just as you would expect. The movies places an emotional connection with Creasy and Pita, which progresses throughout the film.

Then comes the dark side of the movie, the second half. This is where all of the action comes to life. It all starts with Pita getting kidnapped, and Creasy wanting to take revenge. He vows to kill every single person involved in the kidnapping. In doing so, he finds out an array of things. Each thing he finds out, brings him closer to the unimaginable truth, and it's shocking ending, which is for you to find out.

In conclusion, Man on Fire is a very unique film, unlike many pointless action films. It has a great message, which shouldn't be missed. Another trait that makes this movie great, is that it's based on a true story. The movie contains some great acting, and features the likes of Dakota Fanning, Christopher Walken, and Marc Anthony. Everyone does a great acting job, and no one contradicts each other. It seems as if they picked the perfect cast. I think that this is one of the most underrated movies of 2004. If you ever have a chance to watch it, I would strongly recommend it.

First of all lets put all that crap talk of how a sequel would only ruin the original. Just shut up. The average movie goer loves sequels and sure they are rarely better than the original but that doesn't mean they cant be fun. With that being said here are some of the sequels I would love to see.

Top Gun 2

Not to sound horrible but it is getting annoying how Tom Cruise is still a box office star. Sure Knight and Day didn't light it up but just watch MI:4 make damn good money. Don't Get me wrong, I think Tom may be one of the greatest movie stars off all time but only when his career starts to tank will he consider making Top Gun 2. We all want this movie to be made, it needs to be made and hell, there hasn't been a good fighter pilot movie since the original. I don't care what the plot is, perhaps I could do with less sweaty shirtless men playing volleyball second time around but we have to get the ladies excited as well.

Anchor Man 2

I have no idea why this hasn't been made. The huge following of this movie would make a sequel box office gold. Add in the fact that all the original cast are willing to come back and this makes the situation even more irritating. The fact is that the studio execs have passed on this movie so many times that I really am thinking that this movie will never be made. Oh, in case you were wondering, the plot of the sequel was never really revealed but it was going to be a musical...what could have been.

Star Wars Prequels or Sequels

People are always wanting Episodes 7,8 and 9 but if you read into the "history" of Star Wars, what happened before Episode 1 is where all the good stuff lies. Anyway, George Lucas has made it very clear that he never plans on making any more movies (there is a live action TV show planned) but wait, do we need Lucas to continue? Of course not. We already have all his ideas and as Empire and Jedi showed us we don't need him to direct or write the movies so come on...lets see some more Star Wars.

True Lies 2

Arnold (not Tom Arnold) is back making movies, so that means this movie is now possible. The first one was just plain awesome and if the sequel master himself, James Cameron, decides to make this one I will be one of the first lining up to see it. Sure Harry would be getting a little old in this one but that just sets up everyone's favorite line "I'm getting too old for this shit".

Master and Commander 2

You will see this soon on my list of movies you should see, because it was damn good and way too many people missed it. It was nominated for Best Picture, did well at the box office and there are sequels to the original book, so there is not shortage of materials. The plan was to make a few of these movies but I guess it was not as successful as some may have hoped. Come on, take a chance and make a second one, Russell Crowe needs to be grounded after his return from Krypton (he is currently filming the next superman movie so I wanted everyone to get my witty comment).

Napoleon Dynamite 2

I know it could never live up to the first one, but damn it, I want them to try. If I would green light this movie in a heartbeat as it would be so easy to make money with this movie. The director and cast would all have to return to make a good go of it but I will not get my hopes up as Mr Hess has said there will never be a sequel. I guess I will continue to dream.

North Korea doesn't have much of a film industry, so this look at Korean movies is strictly limited to those works produced in South Korea. The film industry experienced a major boom in the late 1990s, and this success has carried over into the new millennium. With projects boasting high production values, original and challenging storylines, and plenty of talented and attractive actors, Korean movies have garnered international acclaim with no sign of slowing down.

The following list is intended to be an introduction to the cinema of South Korea. You'll notice that the oldest film on the list was released in 1998, but that was an intentional choice on my part. I want to get viewers who are unaccustomed to foreign films interested, and I'm guessing that including Korean movies from the '60s and '70s isn't the best way to go about this.

Oldboy (2003) - The second film in director Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy, Oldboy tells the story of businessman Oh Dae-Su (Choi Min-sik). Captured and imprisoned in a hotel room for unknown reasons, he's released after 15 years and tasked with finding the identity of his captor. What follows is a wickedly beautiful tale of revenge and forbidden love. Voters on CNN named it one of the 10 best Asian films ever made, and it's drawn rave reviews from Quentin Tarantino.

Attack the Gas Station (1999) - A gang of likable thugs rob a gas station at the beginning of the movie, and then they turn right around and rob it again the next night. But this time the manager has stashed the cash, and so the quartet of hooligans kidnap the employees, pump the gas themselves, and keep the money. As they fend off bullies, cops, and deadbeat customers, they become more sympathetic and learn a few things about themselves.

Thirst (2009) - Park Chan-wook helms this tale of a priest who gets turned into a vampire due to a failed medical experiment. As he tries to cope with his condition, he falls for the abused wife of an old friend--with rather bloody results.

The Quiet Family (1998) - Combining horror and dark comedy, this Korean film centers around a family who opens a lodge for hikers, but their clients always end up dying. Korean stars Song Kang-ho and Choi Min-sik co-star.

Joint Security Area (2002) - When two soldiers are killed in the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, a special investigative unit is dispatched to get to the truth. Quentin Tarantino named it one of his 20 favorite films since 1992.

Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005) - The final film in Park Chan-wook's Vengeance Trilogy, the motion picture follows a mild-mannered woman just released from prison for the murder of a schoolboy. It turns out that she's innocent, and every day spent in prison was a day she was plotting revenge against the man who was actually guilty of the crime. A delicious tale of revenge and high-heel pumps.

The Host (2006) - An average Korean family is nearly torn apart when their youngest member is captured and drug into the sewers by a mutated amphibious monster. Pooling their talents together, they seek to rescue the girl and destroy the loathsome creature. Directed by Bong Joon-ho, it's the highest-grossing South Korean film of all time.

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) - The first film in Park Chan-wook's excellent Vengeance Trilogy, Sympathy takes a look at a deaf-mute man trying to get a kidney transplant for his sister. When things don't work out, he resorts to kidnapping the young daughter of an executive--with tragic consequences.

Shiri (1999) - The South Korean version of a Hollywood action film, Shiri is about a team of North Korean agents intent on wreaking havoc against their southern neighbors. Their most successful member is a female sniper who's been active in South Korea as a sleeper agent for years, picking off a number of government officials during that time. An honest cop and his partner must try to unravel the plot and root out the enemy agent, although her true identity may prove troublesome for very different reasons. You'll recognize Yunjin Kim, better known as Sun from the television series Lost.

If you're the type of person who avoids subtitles, I'm hoping this brief look at Korean movies may tempt you to give at least one film on the list a try. You'll find Korean cinema to be a rich blend of foreign culture and modern filmmaking techniques, and they're currently turning out some of the most entertaining motion pictures on any continent. This is just the tip of the iceberg, however, and a search of online rental sites such as Netflix and Blockbuster will turn up hundreds of other films from the country.

I have a fondness for action and adventure movies, and this article was written so that I could share a few of my favorites. Pat yourself on the back; you're a true cinephile.

Star Trek (2009) - Producer/director J.J. Abrams jettisons the senior citizen cast and reboots the greatest sci-fi franchise in the history of television. The big-budget actioner follows the early adventures of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) as he becomes a member of Starfleet, gets on the nerves of Spock (Zachary Quinto), and eventually assumes command of the USS Enterprise to battle a time-traveling Romulan (Eric Bana). Karl Urban is Dr. McCoy, Zoe Saldana is Uhura, John Cho is Sulu, Simon Pegg is Scotty, and Anton Yelchin is Chekov. The film was a massive success, opening the franchise up to a whole new generation. Expect a number of sequels over the coming years.

The Fugitive (1993) - Adapted from the popular television series, The Fugitive stars Harrison Ford as Dr. Richard Kimble, a Chicago surgeon who's unjustly convicted of his wife's murder. On the way to death row, his bus collides with a train, and Kimble escapes to pursue the one-armed man he knows to be responsible for his predicament. His task is made more difficult by the appearance of Sam Gerard (Tommy Lee Jones), a tenacious U.S. Marshal who's used to getting his man. A massive hit at the box office, The Fugitive would land Gerard his own spin-off, U.S. Marshals.

Red Cliff: International Version (2008/2009) - Released as two films during its theatrical run, this Chinese war epic sees director John Woo trade in his trademark gunfights for brutal combat in 3rd century China. Based on the legendary Battle of Red Cliffs, the film details the efforts of a coalition of warlords to resist the advances of the ambitious Cao Cao (Zhang Fengyi). The full international version is almost five hours long, but it's far superior to the abbreviated version that crams both movies into 2 hours. Starring Tony Leung, Takeshi Kaneshiro, Chang Chen, and Zhao Wei.

District B13 (2004) - In this French film, the not-so-distant future has become a pretty ugly place, especially in Paris. One particularly crime-riddled section of the city is cut off from the others as a response to unprecedented crime rates, and those inside form a number of gangs to rule like kings. When crime lord Taha (Bibi Naceri) gets crossways with the anti-drug hero named Leito (David Belle), the end result is Leito behind bars and his sister a prisoner of the ruthless criminal. But when Taha steals a neutron bomb and intends on launching it, Leito will get his chance for revenge by teaming up with a cop who's a master of disguise (Cyril Raffaelli). Filled with elaborate fights, colorful characters, and plenty of parkour, District B13 is a must-see for fans of action and adventure.

The Scorpion King (2002) - Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson reprises the character seen briefly in The Mummy Returns, but this time he's the hero of the story. After failing to kill a sorceress (Kelly Hu) and being left for dead, Mathayus (The Rock) embarks on an epic journey to topple an evil emperor and end his reign of terror. Co-starring Michael Clarke Duncan.

Clash of the Titans (1981) - Young Perseus (Harry Hamlin) heads off on a quest to save the woman he intends to marry, and along the way he'll face the stony stare of Medusa, giant scorpions, a two-headed dog, and all manner of other monstrosities. But they all pale next to the Kraken, a massive beast unleashed from the depths of the ocean to either devour a virgin sacrifice or destroy the city of Joppa. It lacks all the CGI effects of the remake, and that's honestly a very good thing.

Developing Characters That Live through Dialogue and Action

If characters don't come to life on the page or computer screen, a writer has failed to create a good story. Yes, other components are also necessary to provide a complete story, but characters must live through the author's words. Believable dialogue and action breathes life into characters.

Dialogue can reveal character. According to Ellen Macaulay, one of the first things editors do is "skim a submission for effective, realistic dialogue; words that sound like they would actually come out of your character's mouth."

Since dialogue reveals the speaker's personality, emotion, and relationships to other characters, an author needs a few techniques to use. One way is to use different varieties of English: slang, dialect, formal English, or other speech patterns. Another technique would be for a writer to indicate how the characters speak: murmur, shout, advise, console, whine, brag. Manner of speech reveals much about personalities and emotions.

Observing and noting the world around us helps us choose the right details and to write distinctive dialogue. Listening to the way people talk, express themselves gives us the details that cause characters to live.

Actions of characters are often tied closely to dialogue. One way this happens is when dialogue shows what is happening rather than expository details telling. Another is to have the character act before, during, or right after he speaks.

Dictates of writing once insisted that anything other than the word said should be used. Then the cycle went towards using only said. Now the cycle swings back to avoiding said as much as possible. One way to avoid using said or any synonym is to the have the character act.

Knowing how characters move helps the reader "see" them. However, such details should be worked into the story not explained in detail all at one time. If Jane has a habit of tossing her head, nibbing on her lower lip, and twisting her fingers around each other, those actions should be revealed if and when appropriate in the story. Choosing only a few details and weaving them into the story rather than lumped into one paragraph not only allows the reader to have a visual impression of the character, but also adds to the believability.

Other ways exist to help make characters live, but dialogue and action are two that make them breathe and also help keep the story moving.

Attract Mr. Right: Your Holiday Action Plan

Holiday season is officially upon us. Here's a quick course to help ensure you spend a romantic, magical 2006 with the kind of man you've always dreamed about:

1) Love yourself. It's been said that you can't love anybody else until you love yourself. Well, I'll go one further: Nobody can love you until you love yourself, either. Until you do, you will continue to attract losers, abusers, schmoozers, and No-Show Joes. Love yourself, and you will attract men who love you and make you happy. It's that simple.

2) Bring to mind all the frogs you've kissed over the years. Write a list of the qualities you didn't like about them. How did they disappoint you?

3) Turn that list around. Write the opposite quality for every bad quality you listed. For example, if your former boyfriends were unfaithful, dishonest, manipulative, unreliable, you'd turn the list around to read: faithful, truthful, respectful of my feelings, and reliable.

4) Write an affirmation around your new list using the present tense. For example, "I am happily married (or involved with) a faithful, truthful, reliable man, who is fun to be with and respectful of my feelings." (Add the word "fun" to ensure you don't attract the nice but boring type.)

5) Write your affirmation 10-15 times a day for at least 30 days. It helps to conjure the sensation of how you'd feel when you are actually with the person you've described (feeling the affirmation helps convince the subconscious that what you're writing is fact). If you're feeling ambitious, try writing your affirmation with your non-dominant hand three to six times.

6) For the next 30 days, speak your affirmation: In the shower, in the car, while you're cooking dinner (but not on the bus or in a restaurant; people will laugh at you). Again, allow yourself to feel it. This may take time, but keep at it.

7) Be the person you want to marry. If you want a truthful man, be truthful. If you want somebody who resists playing head games, don't play them. If you want somebody polite, turn your cell phone off before you go into the movie theater and drive 25 mph in 25 mph zones.

8) Love yourself. Yes, I'm repeating myself, but loving yourself ensures you attract good men (as well as good jobs, good friends, good parties). What's more, you'll be more likely to recognize all this goodness when it appears.

9) Become aware of inner changes. After a while, you'll begin to attract a different kind of man. More important, you'll be attracted to a different type of man. Man-meeting opportunities will suddenly become abundant. Take notice.

One very annoying aspect of watching movies on television is the constant interruption for commercial breaks. Movie reviews this week looks at the action thriller Salt, starring Angelina Jolie (Lara Croft) back to her best physically demanding role since Lara Croft, (and I must say how impressed I am by her action scenes seeing she is the proud mother of twins).

The movie begins with Evelyn salt (Angelina Jolie) as a CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) agent, who happens to be asked to interview a self confessed Russian renegade, Orlov (Daniel Olbrychski) who walks into the building and purports to say that he has some news that they should all hear, at first they imagine he is just a delusional old man, and don't take him seriously, but he doesn't seem delusional or crazy, and when he tells them he has terminal cancer, they listen a little more inventively to what he has to say. Seeing that Evelyn speaks fluent Russian, the CIA head, Peabody played by the always impressive Chiwetel Ejiafor (Red belt), asks her to interrogate him. As we watch the interrogation, which the CIA monitors with Orlov's heart beat and brain scan to see if he is telling the truth, he seems to pass all the tests with flying colours. At the end of the interrogation Orlov says something that lands Evelyn, as well as Evelyne's work colleague who is always on the look out for her best interests Ted Winters played by Liev Schreiber (Xmen Beginnings: Wolverine) on edge. Peabody would like to interrogate her about what Orlov alleges, but Salt knows something is up, and that there isn't any time for an explanation, so she makes a last dash attempt to leave the building, fearing her husband Mike Krause played by August Diehl (brilliant as the Nazi officer in Inglourious Basterds) is in danger, as it seems her and everyone that is close to her might be implicated in what Orlov has alleged, Peabody on the other hand sees her escape as evidence of guilt.

This begins a cat and mouse chase between the CIA headed by Peabody, and accompanied by Winters to find Salt, and get to the bottom of the allegations Orlov makes, and to prevent Salt from doing what Orlov alleges she is about to do.

Salt is an excellent action movie, and as is customary with many Hollywood themed movies, the movie extrapolates our fears about hidden agents, no doubt with the furor over the recently exposed Russian Spy Ring; and as is standard with Hollywood movies these days, the violence is not for the faint hearted, but the suspense is what makes Salt a great action thriller.
